I used to think I needed to know how to do something before I could start.

If I didn’t know what the finished project would look like, how much it would cost, or whether I could actually figure it out, I was more likely to stay stuck than risk getting it wrong.

Eventually, I realized I was learning more by actually trying than I ever could by watching another tutorial and waiting until I felt ready.

So I started letting myself make mistakes. I researched what I didn’t know, asked questions, tried things, got stuck, and figured out the next problem.

I still don’t know how to do everything.

I just trust myself a little more now to figure it out.

And honestly, I think that’s what DIY has taught me more than anything else.

Pretty storage isn’t always good storage.

We’re so used to seeing perfectly organized homes online that we forget to ask whether those systems actually work for us.

The best storage solutions come from paying attention to how your family really lives—not how you think they should live. Sometimes the solution isn’t changing the habit; it’s changing the system.

Design your home around your life, not the other way around.

We tend to design storage for the version of ourselves we want to be.

The organized version who puts every shoe away and hangs up every coat. But real life doesn’t always work that way—and adding more storage doesn’t necessarily fix the problem.

Instead, pay attention to how you actually use the space. What gets dropped? What needs to be accessible? What gets dirty or wet? Design around those habits instead of trying to force yourself into new ones.

Because good design should make your life easier, not give you another thing to maintain.

Design for the life you actually live.

The version of myself in 2016 thought I’d be working at a big design firm, moving cities, and traveling the world

But life had other plans for me

I moved back home to be with my now husband and worked hard to save up for us to buy our first home.

We bought the condo, started renovating it ourselves and 2 years later lost my just when COVId hit.

It wasn’t the path I pictured but it forced me to slow down and figure out what actually made me happy.

I learned I loved creating with my family, learning as we went and making a home feel like ours!

Now I’m building Mountain Birch Studio, talking to people online I’ve never met and still figuring out A LOT!

I wish 2016 version of me knew you don’t have to know where you’re going to know your moving forward.

One of those “I’ll do it later” tasks… until later turned into way too long. 😂

Cleaning the dryer vent is important, but fighting to get behind the dryer and disconnect the duct? Not exactly motivating.

We found an easier solution with the AlorAir Magnetic Dryer Vent Connector:

I used to look at a room I loved on Pinterest and feel overwhelmed by everything I wanted to change.

I wanted to do it all.

Now I look at each detail as its own obtainable achievement.

Little steps to make it closer to the vision.

Before, it felt overwhelming because I thought I needed to keep buying and changing things for the room to work.

Now I see it as a collection of pieces!

Nothing will match exactly perfect, and that’s okay.

There are still things I want to add—the trim details, updated bedding, and I’m still figuring out the closet doors.

But now I feel relaxed and excited thinking about all the possibilities still ahead.

Focusing on one small detail at a time. 🤎
