The True Meaning of the Holidays: Finding Connection in a World Focused on Gifts!!
Christmas, and the holidays in general, can sometimes feel like a paradox. We’re surrounded by people, yet still, we can feel deeply alone. Not in the way that comes from being physically alone, but emotionally distant from the people we’re with. It’s easy to get caught up in the rush of gift-giving and celebrations, but the true gift of the season isn’t found in what’s wrapped under the tree. It’s found in the time we share with the people we love, and in the simple act of being together.
This year, I felt a wave of disappointment when my family didn’t seem to share the same appreciation for what truly matters. Despite the effort I put into making the holiday special, there was a lack of empathy and connection that left me feeling isolated, even in the midst of family. It made me reflect on how easy it is to lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas in a society that values material things over emotional connection.
I’ve realized that maybe I haven’t emphasized enough how important it is to appreciate what we have, instead of focusing on what we want.
The holidays don’t have to look the same every year, and change is inevitable, but with some grace, we can find a new normal — one that embraces togetherness, love, and the joy of simply being present.
As much as I feel disappointed, I also recognize that the responsibility lies with me too. It's up to all of us, starting at home, to restore the deeper meaning of the season. If we can teach each other to appreciate the moments we share rather than the gifts we give, we might just rediscover what the holidays are really about.
