Today is the World Day Against Child Labor. 138 million children remain in child labor worldwide, nearly one-third of them in hazardous work. This is far too many. The 2026 World Day Against Child Labor campaign from the United Nations, "Red card to child labor: Fair play for children, decent work for adults,” calls for additional action on policies that prevent and remove children from child labor: quality education, universal social protections, decent work and adequate livelihoods for adults, stronger laws and enforcement, better data and monitoring systems, and responsible action in agriculture and supply chains.
Fair trade is one way to help eliminate and prevent child labor. With fair trade, adults get fair wages to support themselves and their families—and child labor is prohibited. These are basic principles that all fair trade businesses must follow. By choosing fair trade, you're choosing to support a better world for children, where they have the opportunity to learn, play, and just be kids.
