A well-designed home is never the work of just one person.

There's the architect thinking through the structure, the builder figuring out how to bring it all together, and the interior designer making sure the spaces work for the people who will actually live there.

Each of us brings something different to the table, and the best projects happen when we're having those conversations together.

I've worked with some incredibly talented architects, builders and tradespeople over the years, and I know how much better a project can be when everyone is working toward the same goal.

It's not about who gets credit for what. It's about getting it right for the client.

That's why I've always looked at design as a team sport.

I notice things in your home that you probably haven't thought twice about.

It doesn't matter if I'm at someone's home, a restaurant or a hotel. I'm always looking at how things are laid out, how the space functions and why certain decisions were made.

It's not about judging whether I like something or would have done it differently. I'm genuinely curious about the thought process behind it.

What was the original intention? What problem were they trying to solve? Does the space actually work for the people using it?

After more than 30 years in this industry, I don't think I'll ever be able to turn that part of my brain off.

What's one thing about your home that you've always wondered why it was designed that way?

There are a few moments in every project that I never get tired of.

When a client realizes they can actually change something about their home that they've been living with for years.

When the plans start coming together and they can finally see what we've been working toward.

When construction is almost finished and everything we've spent months planning starts becoming real.

And my favorite? When the client walks into their finished home and it just feels right.

There's a lot of work, planning and decision-making that happens between those moments, but getting to see people genuinely happy in a home we've created together is why I love what I do.

I knew I wanted to be an interior designer before I even knew what an interior designer was.

I was in high school, and I knew I wanted to do more than pick out pillows, sofas and chairs. I just didn’t know what that career looked like.

My father had a client who worked in hospitality design, so I went to meet her. And that was it. I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

I went back to my guidance counselor, Charlie Johnson, and told him about it. He helped me figure out what it was called, where I needed to go to school and how to get started.

And I’ve been doing it ever since.

Funny how one conversation can set the direction for the rest of your life.

What do you do with the great-grandmother’s chair when you’re designing a brand new home? You find a place for it.

The same goes for original doors from an old house, a piece of furniture that’s been in the family forever, or anything else that has meaning to the people who live there.

I’ve never wanted a home to feel like everything came out of one showroom.

Sometimes a meaningful piece means adjusting the plan or getting creative with where it goes. That’s part of the fun for me.

Those are usually the details that make a house feel like someone actually lives there.

One of my favorite client stories starts with bread.

I had a client who makes her own bread and mills her own flour, so we designed her second kitchen around it.

Her oven needed to be calibrated to match the primary kitchen. She needed storage for grain mills and multiple types of grain. The work surfaces needed to make sense for how she actually bakes.

Another client uses her second kitchen almost entirely for catering. She sets everything up there before a party or Thanksgiving.

Same idea. Completely different use.

This is why I ask so many questions about how you actually live. The kitchen should work for you, not the other way around.

“I don’t really know what I want.” I hear this all the time.

You don’t need to come to me with a finished Pinterest board and every decision already made. That’s what our conversations are for.

I want to know how you live in your home, what you love about it, what drives you crazy, what you wish you had more room for and what you never want to see again.

Sometimes the best starting point is simply knowing what you don’t like.

A home can look beautiful and still not work well for the people living in it.

The little frustrations we tend to overlook can actually tell us a lot about the space and what needs to change. Sometimes it isn’t about adding more. It’s about rethinking how the room is laid out and how it’s being used.

After more than 40 years in the same home, this client was ready for a change. What started as an 80% remodel quickly expanded into a full renovation after the hurricanes hit the West Coast.

Homes evolve, and so does the way we live in them. This project was an opportunity to rethink the entire space and create something that felt beautiful, functional, and right for how this client lives today.
