Lynn Garlick Retablos Retablos and Lynn Retablos

A retablo (painting on panel) is a Northern New Mexico Icon. The Santero painted on hand-hewed boards.

Laymen, called Santeros (saint makers), began to paint retablos in the eighteen hundreds when the church in Rome stopped sending Bibles and icons to this remote and rugged region. He collected the pigment from the land grinding the pigment into powder and making it into paint. The retablo was an integral part of everyday life, the saint, sharing in the struggles and joys of that life. Lynn

I hav

e lived and painted in Taos, New Mexico since 1976. I was originally trained as a landscape and portrait painter. Over the years I have worked in many different mediums, many styles and within the framework of many different schools of thought on art. Regardless of the style, medium, or school, the one thing that has remained constant is my emotional response to the beauty I see around me. I started painting retablos in 1991. I was inspired by the simplicity and devotion with which these icons are painted. They sold well and started demanding more and more time from me. They became, for me, a form of prayer for help, healing and right thought. I ask for love and kindness to show in them because to me it is through kindness that we heal ourselves, our family, our friends and the world. My hope is that this kindness comes through the image of the saint.

Today is the feast day of NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUADALUPE.

We come to you as your loving children.
Watch over us and care for us.
As you held the child Jesus in your arms so take us in your arms.
Protect and keep us safe in all we endeavor to do.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE
Feast Day: December 12
Patronage: the Americas, general needs

On December 12, 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to a Native, Juan Diego, in Mexico, saying she would help the Native people if Juan would go to the Bishop and ask him to build a chapel in her honor on the hill where she now appeared. Juan did as he was asked but the Bishop did not believe him and demanded a sign. The Virgin promised Juan she would give him a sign the next morning. He awoke to find that his uncle was dying. He ran to town for help, but the Virgin stopped him, saying she had already healed his uncle. Then she gave him roses in winter, and he wrapped them in his tilma. Opening it before the Bishop, the roses fell to the floor and there on the cloth of his tilma appeared the image of the Virgin.

Today is the feast day of SAINT DAMASUS.
Patronage: archaeologists

Holy St. Damasus,
may my work be successful, illuminating, and help to preserve a valuable part of man’s footprint on this Earth.

Damasus was born in what is now Portugal. It was then part of the western Roman Empire. At age sixty Damasus became Pope, amid much discord. Another group elected a different Pope. Damasus sometimes had to struggle violently with this other faction. He commissioned St.
Jerome to translate the Scriptures into Latin, which became the version of the Bible known as the Vulgate.
He was responsible for changing the liturgical language of the Church from Greek to Latin. He encouraged devotion to the early martyrs by restoring their tombs in the catacombs. To honor these witnesses to the faith, and to bring concord to the Catholic community in Rome, he wrote inspiring epigrams and had them elaborately engraved on the martyrs’ tombs.
