We are proud to announce the completion of project L19R. Located in Telluride’s quiet east end, this residence represents the first opportunity to own within the highly anticipated Overlook subdivision.

Designed by de alva architects llc, the home was engineered to serve as a lens for the landscape. Every bedroom opens to the outdoors, framing a panoramic gallery that includes the Box Canyon, Bear Creek, and the Telluride Ski Area. The Kazahana Penthouse features:

The Evolution of a New Build | Project L19SR

In Telluride, we don't just build houses; we design sanctuaries that respond to the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains. Today, we’re sharing a comprehensive look at the progress of one of our latest residences.

Starting with the exterior, you can see how the home’s form and materials—natural wood cladding, high-performance metal, and durable board form concrete—interact with the landscape. Moving inside, the "bones" of the design are now fully visible. The great room’s timber trusses create an incredible sense of volume, while the emerging details in the private spaces, like the mosaic tile shower and custom-curated wall treatments, show the level of refinement we bring to every square inch.

Construction is where the drawing board meets the real world, and seeing these elements come together is the most rewarding part of our work.

The Architecture of Atmosphere. 💡

While a home's footprint and form define its presence in the landscape, it’s the interior details that define its soul. We often talk about "mountain modern" in terms of glass and steel, but it’s also found in the warmth of a textured light fixture or the movement in a unique wall treatment.

This close-up from a current project in Telluride shows how we play with light and pattern to create depth and interest in every room. By layering organic shapes with structured elements, we create spaces that are contemporary yet deeply inviting.

It’s these final layers that truly turn a house into a sanctuary.

Our Modern Homestead project was designed with one guiding principle: to honor and amplify its spectacular Telluride setting. Especially in the fall, you can see how the architectural choices and the natural landscape work in perfect harmony.

The home's dark, natural siding and metallic roofline complement the golden hues of the surrounding aspens and the deep blue of the autumn sky. We designed the structure to be low-profile, allowing it to rest gently on the land and ensuring the panoramic views of the San Juan Mountains remain the undisputed star of the show. Every angle, window, and orientation is intended to frame the breathtaking scenery.

This is what it means to create a home that truly belongs in its environment.

It's not every day you get to see a home from this perspective! This aerial shot of our project near Deep Creek, just outside Telluride, beautifully illustrates our commitment to site-specific design.

From above, you can appreciate the intricate geometry of the standing seam metal roof, designed not just for aesthetic appeal but for optimal performance in the challenging mountain climate. Each angle and plane plays a role in shedding snow and managing water, all while contributing to the home's distinctive modern profile.

This view also clearly shows the thoughtful integration of the home within its natural setting—respecting the land while creating a powerful architectural presence.

Project Sneak Peek: The Art of the Staircase.

In one of our newly completed homes in Telluride, the staircase serves as a primary architectural feature. Our goal was to create a piece that felt both structurally robust and visually light.

By combining a strong central steel stringer with floating white oak treads, we were able to achieve a modern, open design that enhances the home's vertical space. The horizontal steel balusters add a layer of linear detail while maintaining a sense of transparency.

It’s details like these that define a custom home, turning functional requirements into moments of beauty. We are incredibly proud of how this central element came together.

Project Spotlight: The Kazahana Penthouse Spa Sanctuary.

For our client in Telluride, the vision was a spa that offered the ultimate retreat after a day on the slopes. At de Alva Architects, we translated that vision into a private space featuring a seamless integration of natural materials and luxurious amenities.

This immersive space includes a custom-built sauna, an expansive steam shower with dual rain heads, and a soaking tub, all enveloped in the warmth of slatted wood ceilings and integrated lighting. It's more than a bathroom; it’s an experience designed for ultimate relaxation and wellness.
