Arizona monsoon season has a way of making emergency lighting feel a lot more relevant.

When the grid goes down, the lighting decisions made months earlier in the specification process suddenly matter very much. Isolite breaks it down simply — and it starts with knowing the difference between two key devices.

⚡ UL924 — the workhorse. Mirrors normal lighting operation, then overrides everything and holds critical fixtures at full brightness the moment power is lost. Works with 0-10V, DALI, and most modern control systems. Smaller, less expensive, and the right call for most projects.

⚡ UL1008 — the transfer switch. Does the same job differently, physically switching critical fixtures from utility to emergency power. Required when phase control or two-wire dimming is in the picture.

Specifying exterior lighting in Arizona? Dark sky compliance isn't a niche concern. You need to be having this conversation on almost every project.

Arizona has some of the most active dark sky legislation in the country, and the requirements vary significantly depending on where a project is located. Michael breaks it down:

⭐ Flagstaff — The strictest in the state. As the world's first International Dark Sky City, Flagstaff has some of the most aggressive lumens per acre allowances you'll encounter anywhere. The Narrow Spectrum Amber (NSA) requirement makes fixture selection especially challenging — only a handful of manufacturers can actually deliver it. Start your fixture search early on Flagstaff projects.

🔭 Tucson, Pima County & Marana — Among the strictest in the US, driven by proximity to Kitt Peak and other major observatories. Lumen caps, full cutoff fixtures, and CCT limits of 3000K or below are all in play, along with curfew provisions in many areas.

🌵 Scottsdale — Dark sky friendly standards baked into development requirements, with an emphasis on shielded fixtures and warmer color temperatures.

🏙️ Phoenix metro — Less restrictive but trending stricter. Specifying with dark sky principles in mind is increasingly best practice even where it isn't required yet.

What this means at the spec stage:

💡 Color temperature: 3000K is the practical default across most of Arizona. NSA is required in Flagstaff and changes the fixture selection conversation entirely.
🔦 Full cutoff fixtures only — light goes down, not up
📐 Photometrics are non-negotiable — lumen caps mean you need to prove compliance
🎛️ Controls are part of it — curfew provisions may require dimming capability after hours

Dark sky compliant lighting, when it's designed well, is also just good lighting.
