European beech box with a cherry lid and an African black wood pull.

This is one of those pieces that is just going to get better with time. Not a lot of contrast just yet with the cherry lid but as it darkens over time this dude will start to really show its colors.

Measures about 4 3/4” wide and 3” tall. Finished out with Rubio Monocoat, given a dry buff, then has Renaissance wax applied.

Beauty in simplicity. 🤘🏼

An “Epic” (to me at least) Throwback Thursday!

This time last year this piece stressed me to no end. I had a deadline, I was going way into uncharted territory as far as what I normally do, and to top it off…. This was a special piece for my very own Grandson. No pressures no stress right?🤣🤣

Figured this “Big Ole Bear” piggy bank was definitely due for another look. Why? Well here I am a year later, facing another deadline (I am noticing a trend now that I think about it 🤣).

This bear piggy bank was made out of solid walnut. It was turned to general shape then carved. Installed a really nice threaded brass insert to allow for easy access for many many years. Then painted and sealed. Had to add a little extra something on the bottom cap of course. Not every day you get to create an heirloom for someone that holds a very special place in your heart. This piece definitely makes me smile.

Finally got around to a “Honey Do” project at home. Long story short the plastic covers that came with the shakers didn’t care for our new gas stove.

So I played around with some new caps. Tickled with how they came out. Finished with Mahoney’s Oil.

P.S. My Bride had to throw in the comment “Oh you finally made something for me”. She is such a troll sometimes. 🤣

Just can’t go wrong with a simple yet handsome black walnut bowl. Always been a big fan of “Beauty in Simplicity”. This is a nice reminder of that fact.

Measuring 7 3/8” wide and almost 2” deep. Finished out with Rubio Monocoat, dry buffed, then Renaissance wax applied. Just love this finish technique. 🤘🏼

Black walnut bowl with white banding. This one was fun.

Cant go wrong with black walnut right? Wanted to try a new to me technique where you do a bit of relief carving and applied a bit of white paint for contrast. Seriously stoked how it came out and definitely doing more in the future.

Measured 8” across and 2 1/2” tall. Finished out with Rubio Monocoat, slowed to cure, gave a dry buff, and then applied Renaissance wax. Had a shop drop Saturday and was one of the first pieces to go. Not surprised. 🤘🏼

Having fun going “Artsy Fartsy” with a small sycamore lidded box.

I really do enjoy making lidded boxes on the lathe. So many options and directions you can go. Felt the end grain box was a little dull so we broke out the SSD-10 and went to town. My goal was to give a bit of a basket weave feel for the base and add some artsy ivy to the top. Used the light tone of the sycamore to give a contrast. Of course then I had to add an African black wood pull with a bit of an acorn vibe for good measure.

Finished out with Rubio Monocoat, let cure for a week, gave a dry buff, and applied Renaissance wax with a hand buff at the end.

Was a fun little experiment. What do you think?

How about a little “Throwback Thursday”?

Been working on a new project this week that uses some of the same techniques as this handsome lidded box. So I figured this was as good of a time to revisit it. This one was maple base with the pyrography that gave it a stitched / woven vibe and had a cherry lid. Of course we had to top it off with an African black wood finial… I mean… We had to right? 🤣

Black walnut lidded box with a curly maple lid. Black walnut pull with a bit of texture for a little extra character. Beauty in simplicity.

Sometimes we create a piece that just feels balanced. This is definitely one of them for me. Black walnut is almost a cheat code when it comes to these types of pieces. Add a nice contrasting figured maple lid and you have a winner. All materials in this piece were purchased from . So lucky to have an incredible mill so close. Let me also add they are also the oldest family owned mill in the state of Texas. That’s pretty cool.

This piece will be available next shop drop (shooting for March 15th).
