Our Monarch & Maker team had the opportunity to join NEWH Houston for an exclusive tour of The Heron, exploring the property’s thoughtfully considered interiors and architecture alongside Doug Detiveaux, Design Director & Senior Associate at Gensler.

We’re always grateful for opportunities to step outside the studio, experience exceptional design firsthand, and connect with fellow members of Houston’s design and hospitality community.

Last night, our VP of Design, Aimee Marling, joined fellow members of NEWH – The Hospitality Industry Network for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Prime 131, one of Berg Hospitality Group’s standout restaurant concepts.

Led by Gail McCleese, founder of Sensitori, the evening explored far more than beautiful interiors. From material selections and custom vendor collaborations to preserving the building’s industrial history, every design decision was intentional—and every detail helped shape the guest experience.

People often think interior design is about selecting finishes, sourcing furniture, or making a home look beautiful.

But the truth is, the most meaningful part of what we do has very little to do with “decor.”

It’s about understanding people deeply enough to create spaces that hold their lives, their milestones, and the moments they’ll never forget.

Before the drywall.
Before the lighting.
Before the furniture is installed.

There was this moment.

A concrete floor inside a home still being built.
A handwritten vision.
Hundreds of painted hearts.
A proposal that transformed a construction site into the beginning of a family legacy.

For Maliek and Mandi, this house was never just a project. It was becoming the backdrop to their future. And being trusted to help create the setting for a moment this personal is something we never take lightly.
