Meet Ruth Smith—an inspiring cornerstone of downtown Thomasville. At nearly 84 years old, Ruth is the proud owner of The Emporium, a beloved destination business recognized by North Carolina Tourism. She and her husband purchased the building in 2007 with a vision to preserve and strengthen downtown at a time when its future felt uncertain. After his passing in 2016, Ruth carried on the legacy he helped build—leaning on the lessons he taught her and the support of her family to keep the doors open and thriving.
A retired registered nurse, Ruth never set out to be a business owner—but her heart for community and commitment to Thomasville led her here. Today, The Emporium is truly a family effort, with her granddaughter Megan managing the store and her daughter Natalie handling the books after working a full-time job. Ruth’s story is one of resilience, faith, and dedication—and a beautiful reminder of how one family’s investment can help shape the future of our downtown.
