Antique Home Almanac 1883

This is one of our oldest items in the shop. This edition is a total of 142 years old and was printed in the birth year of our 32nd president, Franklin D. Roosevelt! The home almanac was used by families for weather, farming, and household information. It was also a medium of advertising for Home Insurance Company's reliability, capitol reserves, and fire protection policies. It was a subtle sales hook that was fool proof due to families using them all year.

The Home Insurance Company of New York, the publisher, had been one of the first companies to open a Chicago office after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

By 1883, when this almanac was printed and distributed by Ducat & Lyon in Chicago, the memory of that devastating fire was still fresh (only 12 years earlier). Handing out this almanac wasn’t just casual marketing, it was a way for the company to remind Chicago residents of the importance of fire insurance in a city that had nearly been burned to the ground.
