Founded in 1964 by Dr. Karl Menninger, The Villages, Inc. was built on a deeply held belief that every child deserves safety, stability, and the opportunity to heal. Created to serve children who have experienced abuse, neglect, or abandonment, the organization’s mission took physical form in 1969 with the opening of the first home on the Topeka campus. From the beginning, Dr. Menninger emphasized that healing happens best in environments that feel like home, places where children are surrounded by consistency, care, and nurturing adults who live alongside them.
That philosophy continues to guide The Villages today.
With five residential homes on its Topeka campus, the organization provides a supportive, family-centered community where children can rebuild trust, develop resilience, and grow with confidence. The updated facility strengthens this mission by intentionally creating spaces that support learning, connection, and daily life.
Spanning more than 24,000 square feet, the two-wing facility brings together residential and educational functions in a cohesive, child-centered environment. The educational wing includes six classrooms, staff offices, collaboration and break spaces, and a large multipurpose room that serves as both an activity space and communal dining area, supported by a full commercial kitchen. A shared commons area connects the two wings, offering a place for gathering, rest, and relationship-building, an essential component of a healing community.
Together, these spaces reflect The Villages’ enduring commitment to providing not just shelter, but a true sense of belonging, supporting its mission to help children heal, thrive, and build a stronger future!
