OCTOBER GEMSTONE OF THE MONTH: FLUORITE 💚
October is all about one of our favorite minerals to collect and display: FLUORITE! For the entire month, ALL FLUORITE STOREWIDE is 10% OFF, plus we have a special case of select fluorite pieces that are 25% OFF!
Fluorite is especially famous for its incredible range of colors, including purple, green, blue, yellow, clear, and even multicolored crystals. Some specimens can show multiple colors in the same crystal, creating beautiful bands and zoning. Fluorite is made of calcium and fluorine, with the chemical formula CaF₂, and it commonly forms in cubic crystals. It also has a relatively low hardness of 4 on the Mohs scale, making it a softer mineral than quartz.
🌎 WHERE DOES FLUORITE COME FROM?
Fluorite is mined in locations all around the world, including China, Mexico, South Africa, Mongolia, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The U.S. has a long history of fluorite mining, particularly in the Illinois and Kentucky Fluorspar District. Fluorite has also been mined extensively in several western states, including Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, and Alaska.
⛏️ A LITTLE HISTORY
Fluorite has been valued for centuries, both as a collectible mineral and as an important industrial material. Its name comes from the Latin word fluere, meaning “to flow,” because powdered fluorite was historically used as a flux to help minerals melt more easily during metalworking. Today, the commercial name “fluorspar” refers to fluorite used for industrial purposes. Fluorite is also the primary mineral source of fluorine.
And of course, we have plenty to explore at Cosmic Soup! From colorful specimens and clusters to polished pieces and unique display pieces, there’s a lot of fluorite to dig through.
