Catalina Rug America’s Top Source of Hand-Knotted Persian & Oriental Rugs Since 1998. Located in Los Angeles and serving nationwide.

From its beginnings in Iran, Catalina Rug has been in the rug business for three generations. The US store was launched in 1999 in a small front store in Redondo Beach, a beach city in Southern California. It is operated by the owners Jeff Shadkam and Rose Shadkam. Jeff Shadkam is the 3rd generation in his family to be in the rug business and has over 35 years of experience. Rose has over 17 years of experience and loves helping customers with choosing the perfect rug for their home. Always striving to improve our customers’ experience, we were one of the first rug stores to go online. The company expanded quickly and is now a worldwide online rug store. Catalina Rug currently operates out of a large warehouse in the city of Torrance in sunny Southern California.

"It looks spectacular." 🏡

That's how one client greeted their new 10' × 13' Tabriz the morning it arrived, in a quick video sent to Rose on our team.

The funny part: this isn't even the room it was bought for. It's headed to a home in Charleston, South Carolina, where it'll be the centerpiece of a much bigger room. Until the move, about a year out, it's living here, and it fits almost to the inch. (They're already hunting for a round rug to match.)

Red field, a gold and ivory medallion, a soft sage border. It looks right at home already.

No medallion. Nowhere for your eye to stop. That's the point. 🧶

This Sarouk is woven in the Afshan pattern. Afshan means "scattered flowers," and that's exactly what the weavers did: rosettes, leafy branches and paired floral sprays spread across a soft ivory field, with nothing in the center to anchor them.

Most people picture Sarouks in deep red. This one goes the other way. The ivory field brightens the whole room, and navy, olive and turquoise flowers float on top of it, framed by a warm brick-red border.

It was hand-knotted 70 to 80 years ago at about 225 knots per square inch, enough for the vines to curve freely instead of stepping in straight lines. Washed, in like-new condition, with a plush high pile.

Every rug has a hometown. 🗺️

Meet Malayer, a town in western Iran's Hamadan Province, surrounded by more than 100 weaving villages. For generations its weavers worked mostly alone at home, on small rugs and runners. Big carpets were rare.

What makes a Malayer interesting is where it sits, between Hamadan and Sarouk country. Its weavers borrowed from both, tied the symmetric knot, clipped the pile short so the drawing stays sharp, and often wove finer than the Hamadan rugs around them.

That's why slide 4 is a rare find: an antique 12'8" × 21' Malayer, 80 to 100 years old, with an all-over Herati pattern on a deep navy field.

Every rug in our gallery had to pass ten checks first. Fail one and it doesn't come in. 🔍

Here's the list:
1. Pattern: symmetry, alignment, and a design that suits the rug's size
2. Materials: the quality of the wool or silk pile and the foundation
3. Symmetry and straightness
4. Authenticity: does the weave match its lineage? Is that Tabriz really a Tabriz?
5. Knot count: we measure it ourselves with a ruler. That's the KPSI you see on every product page.
6. Color harmony
7. Abrash: consistent, natural color variation across the rug
8. Condition: fading, color run, worn areas, damaged edges or fringe
9. Repairs: a rug with major repairs is rejected
10. Durability: pile thickness and weave tightness, so it can be washed and actually lived on

The way we see it, every rug we buy has to be one we'd be happy to keep for years. Only then is it ready to sell.

First up, a 10-year-old Golden who, in their owner's words, "loves to dig like a puppy, but not on this Persian from Catalina." We'll take it.

Then a black-and-white spaniel on patrol, a cat stretched out across the medallion like it paid for the rug, and Mittens, curled up and keeping an eye on things.

625 knots in every square inch. 🧶

That's the knot count on this Nain, and it's why the drawing looks so clean. Every vine curls smoothly and every blossom has a crisp edge, almost like ink on paper.

Nain is known for exactly this palette: ivory and cream with soft blues and greys. The pile mixes wool with silk, so the pattern picks up a gentle sheen as you walk around it.

At 6'9" × 10'1", that's about 6 million hand-tied knots, in a size that works under a sofa grouping, a dining table or a bed.

The most common rug mistake isn't the color or the pattern. It's the size. 📏

A rug that's too small floats in the middle of the room and makes the whole space look cheaper than it is. The rule is simple: buy the largest rug the space can handle.

How to check:
• Living room: the rug holds the whole seating group, or at least the front legs of every piece.
• Dining room: every chair leg stays on the rug, even with the chair pulled all the way out.
• Bedroom: the rug frames the bed, so you step onto it on either side.

A bigger rug also stops furniture from wobbling half on, half off, and there's no edge in the walkway to trip on.

There's writing woven into this Kashan. Watch for it around the one-minute mark. 🧶

Just above the fringe at one end sits a small cartouche, knotted in Persian script in green, white and red. Inscriptions like this usually record the workshop, the weaver, or where the rug was made.

The rest is classic Kashan: a red field full of flowering vines, a medallion in ivory, teal and navy, and a wide ivory border. It's tied at about 324 knots per square inch, which comes to nearly 10 million knots across 12'9" × 16'6".

It's 50 to 60 years old, washed, and in like-new condition.

Ever walk into a room with nice furniture that still feels cold? 🛋️

It's rarely the sofa. Usually the room is missing an anchor.

A hand-knotted Persian rug pulls everything together. It gives the furniture something to sit on, adds warmth and color, and makes a sparse room feel deliberate instead of empty. It changes how the room feels underfoot too. Hand-spun wool or silk feels nothing like a synthetic rug.

Don't skip the in-between spaces either. A good runner turns a plain hallway or entry into something closer to a gallery.
