The Reno Story, Part 1.

Yesterday we shared a look back at MotoArt’s early days at the Reno Air Races. Now, Dave tells the story in his own words.

Before PlaneTags, before hundreds of aircraft became part of our collection, there was MotoArt, a few big ideas, and Reno.

Here’s where it all began.

Before PlaneTags, there was Reno.

More than 25 years ago, Dave Hall and his former business partner Donovan Fell headed to the Reno Air Races with a dream: turn retired aircraft parts into functional art and give pieces of aviation history a second life.

Those early trips to Reno became an important part of the MotoArt story. Dave and Donovan brought their creations to the races, connected with the aviation community, and even sponsored legendary Unlimited racer Voodoo.

A lot has changed since these photos were taken. MotoArt grew, PlaneTags came along, and over the years we've preserved pieces of some of the very aircraft that once raced around Reno's pylons.

Now, more than two decades later, Reno has found its way back into our shop in a way we never could have imagined back then.

We're digging through the archives this week and sharing some of our favorite memories as we count down to the next chapter.

It all started at Reno.

On This Day: The Super Guppy Takes Flight

On August 31, 1965, one of the most unusual and important cargo aircraft ever created took to the skies.

The Super Guppy was born from a problem facing America's rapidly growing space program: how do you move enormous Saturn rocket components across the country when they're too large for conventional aircraft, trains or trucks?

Before the Guppies, oversized hardware could spend nearly three weeks traveling by sea through the Panama Canal. The Guppy changed that journey from weeks to hours.

And the story didn't end with NASA.

The design evolved into the Super Guppy Turbine, and the very first one built, F-BTGV, went on to serve Airbus transporting large aircraft components across Europe. When its story was nearing an end, MotoArt was able to preserve its fuselage with the help of the South Wales Aviation Museum and give that historic material a new life as PlaneTags.

61 years after that first Super Guppy flight, there's still nothing else quite like a Guppy.

Happy first-flight anniversary to one of aviation's greatest problem solvers.

Built to go almost anywhere.

This Grumman Goose logged more than 34,000 flight hours, including nearly 50 years of saltwater operations.

From WWII service to Alaska and the British Columbia coast, what a life this Goose lived.

Now you can hold a piece of that history.
