Sometimes the most important design decision is knowing when to add a curve. ⚪️

In this space, we intentionally layered strong vertical and horizontal elements to complement the angular architecture: a striped linen wallcovering to draw the eye upward, a painted tongue-and-groove ceiling in the adjacent space, and a horizontal stainless steel cable railing.

The challenge wasn’t creating visual interest. It was creating balance.

To soften the strong directional lines and unify the composition, we introduced a circular silver chandelier. Its curved form provides contrast to the linear elements, while its metallic finish subtly references the stainless steel cable railing. The result is a space that feels both visually engaging and thoughtfully resolved.

Great design isn’t about avoiding tension. It’s about knowing how to harmonize it.

The details are never just details. They are the design.

These custom bar shelves we dreamt up combine the warmth of pickled white oak with the refined elegance of brass inlay and escutcheons. (Swipe left to reveal the handcrafted details!) While these elements may seem small on their own, together they create depth, character, and a sense of intentionality that defines great design.

At SBD, we believe the most memorable interiors are built on carefully considered details. Every material selection, finish, and decorative accent contributes to a cohesive story, proving that true luxury is found in the craftsmanship you notice up close.

Designing around architectural challenges often yields the most beautiful results. 💜

In the primary bedroom at , we embraced the angles of the space rather than fighting them. Our clients requested a king bed with nightstands on each side. However, the wall that the previous owners had placed the bed on didn’t have enough room to accommodate this. (Swipe left to see the before pics.) The solution? A reeded platform bed with integrated nightstands that nestles perfectly into the eaves, transforming what could have been an awkward area into a focal point.

While the bed grounds the space, the wallpaper is truly the star of the show. Its dramatic pattern sets the tone for the entire room. Layered throughout the space, shades of our client’s favorite color, purple, infuse warmth, personality, and depth. Striped linen motorized draperies add softness and texture while introducing another layer of pattern, proving that thoughtfully paired elements can create a balance that feels both bold and harmonious.

The redesign wasn’t just about fitting a king bed. By reworking the furniture plan, we improved the room’s circulation, creating a seamless path to the walk-in closet and primary bath without having to navigate around the bed.

One of our favorite original details? The curved wall corner. (Swipe left!) We echoed that gentle curve in the platform bed, dresser, and occasional chair, softening the strong lines and angles of the architecture. These details create harmony throughout the room and result in a primary bedroom that feels cozy, intentional, and completely unique to the homeowner.

Welcome to SBD Unscripted, a weekly feature answering your most pressing questions about the design process.

What we do. How we do it. Why we do it.

The layers behind the design. The artistry behind the atmosphere. The intentional process, thoughtful conversations, seamless collaboration, and creative strategy that guide every service we provide and shape every space we create.

Consider this your all-access pass. ✨

This week we’re answering the question: What is a hard finishes presentation?

A hard finishes presentation is where we curate and present all of the fixed material selections that shape the foundation of a space. This typically includes flooring, tile, cabinetry, countertops, plumbing fixtures, hardware, paint selections, and decorative lighting - all thoughtfully layered together to ensure a cohesive overall design vision.

It is one of the most important phases of the design process, as these selections establish the tone, functionality, and long-term aesthetic of the home.

Curious about how we work? Drop your questions in the comments below and we may feature them in an upcoming SBD Unscripted! 👇

Who says small can’t be mighty?! 💪

This workhorse of a kitchen island proves that thoughtful design maximizes function without sacrificing style no matter what the size. With a built-in microwave, a spacious storage drawer, dedicated space for baking trays, and two custom pull-out wooden serving trays on the sink-facing side, it’s a dream for lakeside entertaining.
