I was able to cut 3 clean slabs from the top of this huge sugar maple. But, alas, I located the foreign objects in the 4th. Not only did I locate the foreign objects, but I sawed through 2 at once on quite an angle.
After hitting additional metal in a subsequent slab, the client and I decided to abandon this log and focus on the next one up the tree. Luckily this next log yielded 10 beautiful slabs, and we avoided any metal! We also cut some great limb wood along with a few smaller pine and maple logs up the hill.
Unfortunately, with chainsaw milling, hitting any kind of metal is quite damaging to the chain. I still use this chain, but it is now missing one tooth, and this cost about half the life of the chain along with a significant amount of time grinding the teeth back beyond the damage.
If you like cutting big trees, (or possibly any trees), you better plan to occasionally hit metal.
