There isn’t only one kind of “sweetheart.”
Sweetest Day eventually grew to include spouses, significant others, family members, friends, coworkers, and other people who make a difference in our lives. So think beyond romance. Sweetest Day didn’t begin as another Valentine’s Day.
Some of its earliest celebrations in Cleveland focused on people who were easily overlooked. Thousands of boxes of candy were distributed to children, older adults, newsboys, and others throughout the community. The idea was simple. Remember someone. Bring them a little happiness. Let them know someone was thinking about them.
That part of Sweetest Day is worth keeping.

Did you know Sweetest Day has its roots right here in Ohio?
More than a century ago, Cleveland candy makers helped popularize a day centered around sharing treats and bringing happiness to others, including children in orphanages, older adults, and people who might otherwise have been forgotten.
Over time, Sweetest Day grew into a tradition of remembering the people who make life sweeter.
And more than 100 years later, Ohio is still one of the places where Sweetest Day means the most.
This year, Sweetest Day is Saturday, October 17.
Over the next two weeks, we’re going to share a little of the history behind this uniquely Ohio tradition and plenty of ways to remind someone, “You matter to me.”
