I loved serving as a judge for this year’s Parade of Homes and celebrating alongside some of the best builders, designers, and craftspeople in the Capital Region last night. The hardest part of this kitchen wasn't the layout. It was the heaviness.

Beautiful bones, a Wolf range most of us would happily marry, gorgeous oak floors... and yet the room felt like it was always wearing a coat indoors. Dark espresso cabinets. Busy brown granite. A backsplash that quietly canceled out every ounce of natural light.

Our clients didn't want to start over. They wanted to feel something different when they walked in.

So we got strategic instead of demolition-happy. The cabinets got painted in Santorini Blue by Benjamin Moore (a dusty blue-gray that reads like a colorful neutral). White quartz with a waterfall edge wraps the peninsula and bounces light through the whole main floor. A vertical picket tile backsplash makes the ceilings feel taller without anyone touching the actual ceiling. Satin gold pulls warm the whole palette up and pull the oak floors back into the conversation.

No walls came down. No appliances got replaced. The room just got to breathe.

This is what we mean when we say a kitchen doesn't have to be gutted to feel like yours again.

You might know me for kitchen cabinets and design boards. But what a lot of people don't know is that I've been painting for over 20 years.
