The Spanish used feast days as a calendar. They didn't have to say, "It's August 7." They would say, "It's the feast of San Cayetano." Everyone would know the date. (By the way, Kino named the first location of Tumacacori after San Cayetano. It was beneath that peak, which most likely received its name on that date).

It was on , the feast day of St. Joseph, March 19, 1753, that the Tumacácori mission community was officially relocated to its present site at modern-day Tumacácori National Historical Park.

The new site needed a new name. "Hey, what day is it today? March 19th? OK. San José de Tumacácori it is."

Previously, the O'odham village of San Cayetano de Tumacácori was located on the east side of the Santa Cruz River, about a mile to the south. But it wasn’t a priest who moved and renamed Tumacácori. It was the military commander of the Tubac Presidio, Tomás Belderrain. The move may have been designed to provide better protection for the mission by the presidio soldiers. It certainly allowed the mission priest to better serve the growing Spanish population in Tubac.
