Oh My Southern Mums I believe every kid deserves to experience this tradition throughout their school years. Hello! I’m so grateful to everyone who has trusted me over the years.

My goal is to ensure every student has the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful, high-quality Homecoming mum or garter without putting a strain on parents’ budgets. My name is Callie Jo.�I’ve been creating mums since 2014, with experience even before then. I was fortunate to learn from the best—my Aunt and Uncle—while I was in middle school. By the time I reached high school, I was more involved, and when my sister-in-law started Pre-K, I dove back into making mums and garters full-time. I’ve always been a bit of an overachiever when it comes to designing. Sometimes I have to remind myself not to “go too big,” but after all, this is Texas—and here, bigger is better! One thing that’s very important to me is keeping prices reasonable. My goal is to ensure every student has the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful, high-quality mum or garter without putting a strain on parents’ budgets. Every braid in my work is handmade and customized, and I love adding thoughtful extras to make each piece unique. For me, a mum or garter isn’t complete unless it feels full, detailed, and special. The joy on a student’s face when they see their finished mum or garter is truly the best reward and the reason I continue to pour my heart into each one.

Lindale, TX is where my mum-making journey began. My wonderful aunt and uncle taught me all the basics and helped spark something that I’ve continued to grow and learn from over the years. 💙

Since then, I’ve picked up so many new techniques and added a little more creativity with every mum I make—but this one feels extra special. I believe this is the first Lindale mum I’ve made since I first learned how to make them!

And she is definitely showing that Lindale Eagle pride! 🦅💙 Decked out in royal blue, black, white, and silver with lots of sparkle, bold ribbons, checkered details, personalized touches, and all those gorgeous blue feathers!

It feels so special to come full circle and create for the place where it all started. 💙🦅

🎀 Ever wonder how much ribbon actually goes into one of my Large Mums? 🎀

For all of my new followers—and even some who have been here for a while—I wanted to share a little behind-the-scenes look at what actually goes into creating one of my mums. 💙✨

Something you may not know is that I personally make every braid, every loop, every bow, and every ribbon detail you see. I also design my cutouts and take the time to outline and layer them so they flow with the overall design.

I don’t purchase pre-made braids, chains, bows, or ribbon pieces. I start with rolls of ribbon, long strands of trinkets and embellishments, and materials I feel will best complement your mum. From there, everything is measured, cut, braided, looped, layered, and put together by hand.

My Large Mum skirts typically measure 30–38 inches long, not including the top. The tops vary in size depending on the design, shape, and any special requests.

So, how much ribbon went into this ONE Large Mum? 👀

🎀 Skirt — 4.9 yards
♡ Heart Chain — 16.3 yards
✨ Gold Loop — 9.92 yards
💙 Blue Loop — 8.25 yards
💎 Texas Diamond Braid — 11.86 yards
🪽 Angel Wing Braid — 7.86 yards
🎀 Gold Bow — 1.16 yards

✨ That’s almost 70 YARDS of ribbon in ONE mum! ✨ (70% of a 🏈 field!)

And that doesn’t include the trinkets, cutouts, embellishments, backing, or all of the other little details that bring the finished design together.

There is so much more that goes into these mums than what you see at first glance. Each one takes time, planning, creativity, and a whole lot of handwork. ❤️

Every mum is created piece by piece, with attention to the smallest details, because I want each one to be as special and unique as the person wearing it.

As the season comes to an end for Oh My Southern Mums, I want to take a moment to sincerely thank each and every one of you who supported my small business this year. ❤️

This season taught me A LOT.

I got a later start than I should have, I took on more orders than I could realistically handle, I made a lot of kiddos happy, and unfortunately, I also let a few down. That is something I take to heart tremendously!

I want to share a little behind-the-scenes honesty with y’all.

For one school alone, I took on 9+ mum orders of all different sizes with only a couple of days to get them finished—some with less than 24 hours. Looking back, I’m not sure why I thought I could physically make that happen, but I was determined to try.

One night I worked until 3 a.m. Another until 1 a.m. And then I pulled an all-nighter trying to get everything finished.

And the truth is… I still didn’t get them all done the way I wanted to.

I was exhausted, embarrassed, disappointed in myself, and ready to never touch another piece of ribbon again. I had set a standard for my work, and knowing that I couldn’t give every single order the time and attention it deserved was incredibly hard for me.

Three of those nine kiddos received something to wear, but it wasn’t what I consider one of “my normal mums.” While I’m thankful they had something, I also know it wasn’t the experience or finished product I wanted to give them.

What meant more to me than I can explain was the grace and encouragement I received from those customers. Instead of tearing me down during a moment when I was already doing plenty of that myself, they showed me kindness, patience, and understanding. I will never forget that. ❤️

I learned a very important lesson this season: I have to know my limits.

Going into future seasons, I will be limiting the number of orders I accept based on the size of each mum and the amount of time I realistically have available. That may mean sometimes having to say, “I’m so sorry, but I can’t take your order at this time.”

Please know that when I say no, it isn’t because I don’t appreciate your business. It’s actually the opposite. I would rather respectfully turn down an order than accept it knowing I may not be able to give it the time, quality, and attention it deserves.

I don’t want to repeat the mistakes I made this year, and most importantly, I don’t want another kiddo to be disappointed because I took on more than I could handle, this includes my own kids!

This little business is still growing, and so am I. I’m learning with every order, every late night, every mistake, and every happy customer.

To everyone who ordered from Oh My Southern Mums, recommended me, shared my work, encouraged me, or simply showed me a little grace this season—THANK YOU. 🥹❤️

Your support means more than you know.
