Painting a room can have dramatic effects. The traditional style of painting the walls one color and all the trim white, can make walls seem shorter and ceilings lower. Which in really high ceiling rooms, can be a good idea!
Painting the room and the ceiling the same color can also help bring a ceiling height down a bit and make the room seem more intimate and cozy; especially in rooms with color.
And painting the walls and the crown in the same color, but leaving the ceiling white, will give the illusion of higher ceilings and that the ceiling almost disappears.
There are so many other tricks to make rooms look larger, longer, smaller, cozier, and they are all done with paint. So, the next time you are painting a room, think about the feeling you want the room to have. Think about your ceiling heights and if you want them higher or lower. A room with 8’ ceilings vs a room with 20’ ceilings can really matter where you stop your paint.
With open floor plans and high ceilings, there are ways to make the room more intimate and less wide open. Ask your designer for help!
If your room feels off, it just might be the paint.
