At 8,250 square feet, Bagua House sits lightly on its slope. We gathered three wings into a U-shape around a landscaped entry court, the threshold that carries you from the wider world into the home, and kept the whole house low and almost entirely on one level, so the neighbors keep their own view of the mountains.

What makes it unusual is how the rooms connect. The courtyard threads between the wings, so moving through the house can mean stepping into the landscape and back. That interleaving of inside and out gives even a generous home a real sense of amplitude, and a quiet that feels at once expansive and grounded.

Thirty-five acres on an Aspen ridgeline, with a view of all four ski mountains. The house was built in the 1960s for Norwegian Olympic gold medalist Stein Eriksen and designed by Ellie Brickham, Aspen’s first practicing female architect. By the time it reached us, her Aspen Modern original was deteriorating and no longer met code.

As committed preservationists, we kept the spirit of Brickham’s design, staying nearly within the original footprint. The architecture now reads in two moves: a cut-stone entry façade that roots the house in the region’s building traditions, and a fully glazed western façade that opens the whole of that view to the landscape.

Designing for hospitality in Aspen means understanding that luxury isn’t about opulence; it’s about stewarding places that people care about. As architects behind many of the town’s landmark projects, Rowland+Broughton approaches historic properties like Hotel Jerome, Auberge Collection with a deep respect for both heritage and experience, balancing preservation with the expectations of modern guests.

Over more than a decade, R+B has helped shape the hotel’s ongoing evolution. Beginning with a comprehensive renovation of the historic 1889 property in 2011–2012, the firm’s work has since expanded to include the restoration of the adjacent Aspen Times Building, the addition of new hotel suites, and the transformation of the central courtyard. Each intervention builds on the last, honoring the hotel’s legacy while thoughtfully preparing it for future generations.

At First Light, the connection to Walla Walla’s wine country extends beyond the architecture and into the collected interior. Furnishings were discovered alongside the clients through buying trips to San Francisco and Milan, creating a layered collection that reflects the home’s spirit: contemporary yet deeply connected to its place among the vineyards.

Throughout the residence, material choices draw from the surrounding landscape: basalt-toned stone references the region’s volcanic terrain, while cedar siding echoes the vineyard stakes that shape the view. Each element reinforces a dialogue between the home and its setting, creating a residence designed for gathering, slowing down, and savoring time in place.

There’s a moment in nearly every project where the right piece simply doesn’t exist yet, so it gets made. A dining table extends to welcome more guests. A bed is crafted for the perfect night’s sleep. Hidden desks and integrated storage eliminate visual clutter while making everyday life feel effortless.

This is where our Italian Bottega model earns its keep. Architecture, interiors, and craftsmanship don’t operate in sequence for us; they’re in constant conversation, each informing the other. When a piece needs to be custom, it’s developed alongside artisans and makers from the very beginning, designed not just to fit a space, but to support exactly how a client lives.

It’s rarely the fastest path, yet it’s always the most rewarding one.

Walk through Aspen, and much of what you pass is R+B work: The Boettcher Center, Hotel Jerome, Auberge Collection, The White House Tavern, , W Aspen, Cloud 9 – work spanning retail, hospitality, and food and drink.

No two are alike. Each was designed on its own terms, for its own place and purpose. What carries through them is a standard rather than a style: the quality of the making, the attention to detail, and a genuine regard for what was already there. That regard matters more in Aspen than almost anywhere. Aspen is a place built on protecting what came before.

Sarah Broughton spent eight years on Aspen’s Historic Preservation Commission; John Rowland served on Planning and Zoning. “We see ourselves as stewards,” Sarah says. “It’s one of the obligations we are honored to have in our community.”

That word, stewardship, is the through-line. Not a signature you can point to, but the measure of care each project is given on its own.

W Aspen began with a question: what does a ski chalet look like today? Drawing on the iconic chalets that shaped the area in the 1940s through the ‘60s, we designed a modern interpretation of the form, rooted in Aspen’s skiing heritage.

The roof adds an all-weather deck open year-round, with a heated pool, hot tub, fire pits, cabanas, a full bar, and a DJ booth, set against panoramic views of the mountains. Just as much of a draw once the snow melts as at the height of the season.

In Aspen, where the mountain lodge vernacular dominates, Lookout House’s unique aesthetic is akin to the modernist grandeur of postwar urban architecture. Given the near-museum scale of the owners’ contemporary art collection, the choice remains entirely appropriate. The home’s ample wall space and gallery-style hallways showcase nearly 60 meticulously curated pieces. Overlooking a dramatically down-sloping meadow, the home was configured to provide a pristine backdrop to the art pieces while remaining invisible to neighbors.
