Gerry and I fired these pots yesterday in the propane gas top hat kiln. I made them on a potter's wheel and applied terra sigillata infused with purple mica before putting them in the electric kiln to bisque fire. Yesterday's firing brought out the purple sheen when the horsehair was applied.

I have been taking a break from pottery due to an achy back, but I recently decided to try making some new raku horsehair vases. They are such fun to fire in the gas kiln on a slightly cool NC Fall day. The heat in the kiln reaches 1700 degrees before we remove a vase. Then as the temperature goes down a little, sugar is placed on the pot to form a little grouping of black carbon dots. Next, strands of horsehair are draped on the surface of the pot. The burning hair leaves a very dark carbon marking where it was laying as well as shades of gray where the smoke paints the pot.

Prices range from $40 to $75 depending on size. Shipping charges are USPS rates to your location. Or, if you are local, you can pick up. I can make a vase with your horse's hair, if you will mail or drop off the hair.

Please message me if you wish to make a purchase or want more information.

Also, please share and like my page. Thanks.
