ROMANTIC TOWER BEDROOM

The primary bedroom we designed in a stone manor house is a romantic private space up a discreet stair to this third-floor hideaway with windows looking into trees.

The material are earthy from the artisan plaster walls, dark steel-casement windows, wide plank oak floors, a woven suede area rug and a natural silk bedcover.

A remarkable chandelier of twisting thorned branches and indirect light by through hangs from the tall tower ceiling casting remarkable shadows on the ceiling.

The bed and vintage Scandinavian chairs are low slung serving to emphasize the tall volume and giving maximum view out the wrap around we windows.

TINY & DELIGHTFUL

Perhaps my favorite room in a farmhouse we renovated in Roxbury, CT is this teeny tiny bedroom in the former attic, now the third floor.

A very simple, cozy and reassuring space designed for a child, well really visiting grandchildren the pictures on the wall are paintings by his great-grandmother.

The first child to sleep here was the young son, now nearly grown, of one of the boys, now men, who shared the 10’ x 10’ bedroom for two.

It was with great delight for me to show the newly completed room to its first occupant whose eyes bugged out with delight!

Sure, as designers we love big bold rooms, and take satisfaction in pleasing our clients, but rarely do we get squeals of delight the way I did introducing this room to a young boy. It was memorable for me, and I hope it was for him too.

Calvin & Kelly in Easthampton

Once upon a time, long, long ago I was asked by Kelly Klein for some help finishing up the house in Easthampton that she and Calvin had been working on for years.

The house was a magnificent Shingle Style home - the second to the last house on a dead end road overlooking the Atlantic ocean and Georgica Pond, renovated and reinvented by the architect Thierry Despont.

One of my assignments was to finish this antique bed in a more ‘Out of Africa’ mosquito netting look, than the period drawings that had been done in this very bed by Jed Johnson for Andy Warhol. And add linen curtains.

Their house was nearly complete with exquisite dark-stained antique wide plank floors throughout with sisal matting, white slipcovers, etc. it was remarkable to be with them in their house helping to finish a dreamy residence for two taste makers.

My longtime collaborators helped me with this bed, curtains in a number of rooms, including the double-height Living Room, all to look like nothing had been done.

100 Sq Ft bedroom for 2?!

After my stay in a 140 sq ft hotel room at citizenM Hotels in the Back Bay in Boston I remembered a bedroom I design many years ago.

When I was a young struggling designer I accepted nearly any opportunity to design a room.

In this case I was asked to create a room for two young boys to share - the challenge was the room was only 10’ x 10’!
The completed room ended up in the New York Times HOME Section!

Like a sleeping car of a vintage train the beds were raised up, reached by a ladder. There was a reading light, a built-in bookshelf, curtains to draw for privacy and light control. There was a 10’ wide desk for the boys (now grown men with their own children) to share.

Hanging storage and drawers were built into the beds, pin up space and more bookshelves.

HOUSE GUESTS

One of the great joys that my house in Connecticut provides is the ability to host weekend guests, and to spend quality time with them.

This is the primary Guest Room. It is spacious enough to accommodate an iron four-post Queen bed, an 18th century English bureau, and two upholstered chairs, and with three windows it has lovely light.

There is also a selection of art works on paper - here we see a work by
Nancy Spero, not seen are works by David Hare and Jacqueline Lamba, Robert Motherwell and Aaron Siskind.

After the sun goes down there are three table lamps in the room and a ‘fly’s eye’ overhead fixture by Kenneth Nilson to provide ambiance and illumination.

I had fantasized and imagined for thirty years that one day I would have a weekend house, where friends and family would create memories, and it finally happened!

I made a list of the friends and family who I have had the pleasure of hosting at
‘148GHR’ in the last than ten + years and it was over 125 overnight or weekend guests!
Looking at the list of wonderful people and recounting the experiences of spending quality time together made me smile, and feel a sense of heartwarming satisfaction.
And this number doesn’t include many, many others who have come for meals, swimming or an afternoon tea.

HOTEL POD

At only 140 sq ft, the rooms at in the Back Bay of Boston were a futuristic trip, and a study in thoughtful design in very small spaces.

A King-sized bed sits up against the large single pane window, my room overlooked the Back Bay, the Charles River, MIT and Cambridge beyond.

Designed by every detail has been engineered for efficiency. My hard case carry-on fit perfectly wide open in the drawer under the bed. The vanity was executed complete in Corian, giving the dated material modern panache.

The lighting and light control is both practical and dramatic.

Best occupied by one person the rooms are teeny but memorable.
