Can a new roof be installed on top of my old roof? We have an answer!

"Although it may seem advantageous to install new shingles on top of your old roof because it’s cheaper, faster, and requires less labor, you could be setting yourself up for future costs (and headaches). Unless your current roofing system is completely problem free and only features a single layer of functioning shingles, your new roofing system may fail way too soon.

Here are a few situations where you will need to remove the old roof before completing a reroofing service:

1- Shingles are missing, curled, split, or mossy. 2- The roof decking is sagging due to rot or deterioration. 3- The new shingles are lighter than your current roofing shingles. (This will cause all of the old bumps & ridges to show through the new roofing materials.) 4- Your current roofing system has more than one layer of shingles."

How can a homeowner recognize when a roof system has problems? We have an answer!

"All too often, roof system problems are discovered after leaking or other serious damage occurs. Periodic inspections often can uncover cracked, warped, or missing shingles; loose seams and deteriorated flashings; excessive surface granules accumulating in the gutters or downspouts; and other visible signs of roof system problems. Indoors, look for cracked paint, discolored plasterboard, and peeling wallpaper as signs of damaged roof areas. To schedule a roof inspection with residential roofing contractors, call Dillman Brothers today!"

Homeowners today want roofing materials that are durable, energy-efficient, and low-maintenance—and modern composite or synthetic shingles check all those boxes. Built with advanced polymers and UV-resistant coatings, these shingles are designed to mimic the look of slate or wood while offering better performance in extreme weather.

Here’s what affects their life expectancy:

- Material quality: Premium composite shingles can last 40–50 years with proper care.

- Climate conditions: In areas with harsh freeze-thaw cycles or high humidity, lifespan may shorten slightly without routine maintenance.

- Installation quality: Even the best shingles won’t last if improperly installed—professional workmanship matters.

- Maintenance: Annual roof inspections and quick repairs extend durability and prevent hidden leaks.

Unlike traditional asphalt, composite shingles resist cracking, fading, and mold growth—making them an excellent investment for long-term value. Many come with warranties of 30 years or more, reflecting the confidence manufacturers have in their longevity.

If you’re considering a roofing upgrade, Dillman Brothers can help you explore synthetic shingle options that fit your home’s design and climate. A properly installed composite roof not only boosts curb appeal but also gives you peace of mind for decades to come.

When storms hit hard or temperatures swing from freezing to blazing hot, your gutters take the brunt of it. Choosing the right material isn’t just about looks—it’s about long-term protection. In 2025, homeowners are prioritizing durability, efficiency, and maintenance when it comes to gutters that can withstand unpredictable Midwest weather.

Here’s how today’s most popular gutter materials perform:

- Aluminum Gutters: Lightweight, affordable, and resistant to rust. Ideal for most climates, but may dent during severe hail.

- Copper Gutters: A top-tier choice for longevity and elegance. Copper can last over 50 years and naturally resists corrosion—perfect for heavy rainfall regions.

- Galvanized Steel Gutters: Extremely strong and durable in high-wind or icy conditions, though they require occasional coating to prevent rust.

- Vinyl Gutters: Budget-friendly and easy to install but prone to cracking in freezing temperatures or warping under UV exposure.

For homeowners facing intense seasonal weather, copper and galvanized steel gutters are leading the way in 2025 due to their strength and lifespan. Modern sealants and seamless installation options make them even more reliable than before.

At Dillman Brothers, we help homeowners choose gutter systems that protect their roofs and siding year-round—built to handle both the downpours of spring and the deep freezes of winter. Because your home deserves more than a quick fix—it deserves year-round peace of mind.

A screened porch is the perfect place to relax, but clogged gutters or dirty panels can quickly take away its charm. Regular cleaning and maintenance not only keep your porch looking great but also protect it from water damage and structural wear.

The best way to clean and maintain gutters or panels around a screened porch starts with consistency. Dirt, pollen, and debris build up faster in outdoor spaces, especially after seasonal storms. To stay ahead of the mess, try these simple maintenance steps:

- Clean gutters twice a year: Remove leaves, twigs, and roof debris to prevent overflow that can damage screens and framing.

- Rinse panels gently: Use a soft cloth or sponge with mild soap and water—avoid harsh chemicals that can scratch or cloud clear materials.

- Check for leaks and seams: Inspect where the roof meets the screen panels for small gaps that can let in water or pests.

- Trim nearby trees: Reducing overhanging branches minimizes falling debris and keeps gutters cleaner longer.

At Dillman Brothers, we know that proper maintenance extends the life of your porch and roofing system. Our experts can inspect your setup, clean the gutters, and recommend long-term care solutions tailored to your home’s design and local climate.

Clean panels, clear gutters, and worry-free relaxation—your screened porch deserves nothing less.

10/22/2025

When designing a screened porch, the roof’s slope isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s essential for proper drainage and long-term protection. The right pitch prevents standing water, reduces leaks, and extends the life of your porch materials.

Generally, most screened porch roofs need a minimum slope of ¼ inch per foot for flat-style roofs and up to 3:12 or 4:12 pitch for shingle or metal systems. The exact slope depends on your chosen materials and the local weather. In areas with heavy rainfall or snow, a steeper pitch helps water flow off faster and prevents sagging or ponding.

Here’s what to consider when planning your porch roof:

- Material Type: Shingles require a steeper slope, while metal or polycarbonate panels can perform well with lower pitches.

- Climate: The wetter or snowier your area, the greater the slope needed for proper runoff.

- Attachment Design: If tying into your home’s roofline, matching slopes can create seamless drainage and visual flow.

At Dillman Brothers, we specialize in designing and installing screened porch roofs that balance beauty and performance. Our team ensures every angle and pitch is optimized for your home’s unique structure and the Midwest’s changing weather.

Whether you’re adding a cozy retreat or upgrading your outdoor space, trust Dillman Brothers to deliver precision and durability in every detail.

Rising energy costs and unpredictable weather have homeowners asking: Can my roof actually help insulate my home and reduce HVAC expenses? The answer is a confident yes—modern roofing materials in 2025 are designed to do more than just protect from the elements.

Today’s advanced roofing systems combine thermal efficiency and reflective technology to keep homes cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Materials like cool roof shingles, insulated metal panels, and synthetic underlayments create a barrier that reduces heat transfer, easing the load on your HVAC system.

Here’s how the right roof can save energy year-round:

- Reflective coatings bounce solar heat away, cutting summer cooling costs by up to 20%.

- Insulated decking and radiant barriers minimize heat loss during cold months.

- Ventilated roof designs improve airflow, preventing attic heat buildup and moisture issues.

- High-performance underlayment adds an extra layer of protection and energy efficiency.

When you upgrade with experts like Dillman Brothers, you’re not just getting a roof—you’re investing in a smarter home system that works with your climate, not against it.

Whether you’re looking to replace an aging roof or build with sustainability in mind, choosing energy-efficient materials is one of the easiest ways to lower utility bills while boosting comfort and value.

💡 Your roof can do more than cover your home—it can power your savings.
