Working with Coastal Candle Artisans to create candles with my art has been such a treat 🩷.
I know it’s only October, but when I smelled these candles I got really excited for the holidays 🎄.
Michael, who is a scent wizard🧙‍♂️, always surprises me in the best was with the combinations he chooses. They pair with the art perfectly and really help create a mood.

🛒These candles are available to retailers on faire 🥰 and to the general public at Annapoliscandle.com

Michael really loved this nutcracker character that I drew a few years back and I was excited to finally get to use the art! After chatting, I built out the rest of the charters and created a few other supporting pieces to round the collection out.

The little cast of characters 🎄

Garland Green was creating using watercolor and gouache 🎨. It actually combines two different existing designs that I had in my portfolio…win win ☺️

This pretty holiday piece was painted with gouache ❤️

If you’ve made it this far…here is my very professional iPhone photography setup 😂. Cheep and cheerful as they say! Thank god for Lightroom and a velvet dress that hasn’t fit in years but is also too covered in dog hair to pass on to someone else 🙈. This is why some of us never throw anything out 😅

This gorgeous new print for hope&plum Baby Carriers drops today 🍊. As a non parent, baby wearing isn’t something that took up much of my brain space aside from wondering which of my pets might allow me to carry them in some kind of contraption. After much contemplation, it would for sure be Tea Time the front yard chicken🐓😂. However, since meeting so many lovely people through Hope and Plum I’ve seen the joy, connection, freedom and community it can bring to caretakers 💛. That’s kind of a big deal ✨and I’m really happy to be part of it in some small way.

Clay crumbs and fun 💛. I love how hand building makes me take things slowly, relax and just play. It’s nice having a creative outlet that I don’t need to monetize. So much of my creative energy goes into business which leaves me feeling tired and like all my idea generating is only worthwhile if it’s financially successful and sustainable. Making a living as a creative isn’t easy and the older I get, the more protective I feel over the monetization of my art, ideas and labor. If I could go back in time knowing what I know now, would I choose to sell my creativity? Im honestly not sure 🤷🏻‍♀️. Curious how other artists who have been at this for 20+ years feel?

I can’t even believe it…I’m so spoiled 🥰. To have my creative joy captured alongside halee rae heart-grown sherbet blooms🩷. To have friends that arranged and made all of this happen while I was off island 😭❤️. To connect with an old friend over an art exchange and know this piece will have a home, be used and appreciated for all its beauty and wonky bits 💛🌻. My creative cup feels so very full right now ☺️ and I’m soaking it up!

A friend texted me this morning and said I could probably fix the work with my pretty things 🥹❤️. While I wish that were true, I am happy that on the smallest of levels I can provide art that helps people stay connected and share a bit of kindness.

New Hampshire coziness for Garnet Hill. I love creating magical scenes and this one has so many special moments ✨🩷. A warm cup of cocoa, a gathering with friends, a quiet walk through the woods and tiny mitten clad hands.
Fun fact, if you can find the St. Bernard, it’s actually a drawing of my old dog daisy 🐶😇🩷

It’s always so exciting when you get to see the final product 🌲. I can’t wait to cozy up with this blanket as the days get shorter.

I work through rounds of revisions using slide decks so everything the client and I need is in one place, we can leave notes for each other and easily scroll between rounds. When I can finally share the work, often 1-2 years later, it’s fun to see where we started and why we made certain decisions along the way.

Gotta have at least one toddler eating snow 😆

Over the summer I was in Franconia and got to see the original Garnet Hill barn. It was really special to see a location I had drawn twice by that point and meet the wonderful women who work in the store.
The team I work with couldn’t be any cooler and I’m so grateful for the projects we’ve created together.

PSA 📣Art markets are not bargain markets. In fact, every handmade item should cost more than it would at a retail store. Professionals and hobbyists alike need to be paid living wages for their labor.
Minimum wage in Seattle is $21. So let’s use that a starting point for pricing one ornament.
Creation time is 2 hours-$42
Studio/kiln fee per ornament-$1
Glazes per ornament-$.75 ( best guess 🤷🏻‍♀️)
Ribbons/attachments per ornament-1.35
Packaging per ornament-$2
Those are the easy to calculate base fees. On top of that is your booth fee per event which can range from $50-500. Then there are the hours you set up, work and then tear down the event. There are credit card/ Venmo/ PayPal/ square processing fees, time spent creating advertising for the event, gas/ferry tickets to get there etc. It’s a lot. It’s why my ornaments cost $70. That price also doesn’t take into account my 20+ years of design/ illustration/ ceramic experience which is what makes each ornament and its packaging so special.
Let’s also remember that minimum wage across the US is not a living wage. Most makers I know are realistically making slightly less than minimum wage when all is said and done.
So please, please choose to shop handmade/ local/ small if you can. Support your community ❤️
And whatever you do, please don’t say “I could find this cheeper at X”. 😂 or you will get a rant from me about big box stores stealing designs from small makers, penny pinching their manufacturers and being absolute 🧌 to their vendors. You can just simply walk on by and choose not to buy. Or better yet, compliment the maker on how their work looks professional enough to be in your favorite store and then move on ☺️

Change of season musings 🍂…December will mark the close on the fourth year since leaving full time employment to follow my own path. It’s been arguably one of the most challenging years, more on that later, but also strangely illuminating. Aging has a way of making you understand and appreciate your value and that includes the value my work brings to the brands that choose to work with me. Gone are the days of feeling “lucky” because someone wants to use my work. Sure I am lucky to do what I do for a living BUT that doesn’t mean I need to accept rates that haven’t changed in DECADES, unfair contracts, lower rates for “promised” continual work 🤦🏻‍♀️, working for exposure, brands that won’t publicly give you credit because you might find more work🙈(this one always makes me 🤢).

Instead, I am choosing to say NO to all of that. I know my worth and the value it brings to products. I will choose to continue to work with clients that treat me like a partner, that understand when I need to raise rates and are happy to pass my name on so I can continue to do the work I love. I’ve come to terms with the idea that saying no might very well mean less work for me. That’s scary but ok. I am scrappy, I have skills, loads of experience and I’ll make this life work one way or another.
It’s a privilege to work with creatives 🩷. Treat us well and we will happily create magic for you ✨
