Morning everyone.
Why every day should be small business Saturday.
When someone starts a business there are so many hurdles they face.
They usually must think about giving up a steady salary with benefits. They have to invest money that they have saved up for a long time; a lot of times it was money they were saving for retirement. They will hear many reasons why it won’t work from friends and family that probably won’t support them or expect discounts if they do. We are always grateful for those that do support us. Vacations and holidays are unpaid if we can take them.
They find a location and may have to pay deposits, first, and last month’s rent. The design and fixing up the space are next. May people do not know that unless you own the building the small business have to pay what is known as cam or nnn, which is based on the size of the space in the location and covers the owner’s property tax, insurance, maintenance and other incidentals. If there is a shortfall at the end of the year there is another bill due. Utilities are something else that is to be considered. When you first get going or when times are hard you have to keep the space comfortable, usually hotter or cooler than you would for yourself. Smart meters have raised the cost of utilities for business because there is not an off peak time for us.
Small businesses do not have the buying power of the big stores. They pay more so they have to charge more. Finding employees that share the same vision as they do is another challenge. The small mom and pops can’t pay the same as bigger places, so when they are trying to raise the minimum wage for businesses I hope that they figure out a way to let the small businesses survive.
All of that being said, we chose to pursue our dream. I ask everyone to think of these things when the experience isn’t perfect, or the food costs a little more. Support the small businesses in your area. Not done by AI so there will be grammar and punctuation mistakes.
