"I suppose it is the best thing I have done," wrote John Singer Sargent—born January 12, 1856—in 1916 to his longtime friend and Met Director Edward Robinson, offering to sell his portrait of Madame Pierre Gautreau, with one stipulation:

"I should prefer, on account of the row I had with the lady years ago, that the picture should not be called by her name."

The painting had famously been the subject of great scandal—Sargent's original portrait featured one of her gown straps slipped off the shoulder. It caused such an uproar that Sargent re-painted the strap.

But the strap wasn't the only thing Sargent changed.
