PEACE = JOY = STRENGTH

“The joy of the Lord is my strength” - this phrase has been popping up everywhere I turn lately, it seems. And of course, during the Christmas season, JOY is a key word. Even though I keep repeating the phrase, I get sometimes get sidetracked by all the negative news and daily struggles, and before you know it, I am downcast. My soul is sorrowful, my mind is weak, and my heart is troubled. Where’s the joy!?

Lori Conway said in a Facebook post that, “when we don’t feel joyful, we have to reach way down into our souls and find the joy of the Lord.” (Lori‘s husband passed away suddenly earlier this year, leaving her to raise her children and live her life without her partner in everything she did.)

The joy of the Lord, that is not attainable on our own, is the joy that is unspeakable and full of glory.
I Peter 1:8, “Though you do not now see Him, you believe in Him (trust in Him) and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory.” (ESV) It is like priming a pump. You seek the Lord for His peace because you’re trusting him, then the peace that surpasses understanding fills your heart and mind. As the peace covers you, you began to feel joyful, and as that joy commands your spirit, you feel strength.

PEACE = JOY = STRENGTH

There are times I feel overwhelmed with joy and I’m like, “where did that come from?” It’s just so supernatural that God will take our burdens, worries and fears as we lay them at His feet and turn them into joy by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Let’s break it down … what IS the “JOY of the LORD?”
- Knowing that he is Lord. Having assurance that He cares for us. He is our Adonai.
- Complete trust in Him that brings peace that He will fight our battles. Peace leads to joy.
- Not MY joy because things are going well, but HIS joy because I know that all things will work together for my good if He is in control.

We do have to do our part – seek Him and He will come near. Study His word for every answer you need. Take time to let His Word speak to you. And praise Him.

Thankfulness and praise will always bring joy because you remember all He has brought you through and how His grace and mercy have never left you. You realize there is Somebody Greater than you to handle your life. Praise is the most effective way to prime your joy pump.

I am so thankful for those who have written worship music, because when I can’t find the words to say a song will provide just what I want to express. It’s like finding the perfect greeting card with the sentiment that speaks your heart. You have to personalize it with your own words and name, but wow - how great to find the card that already has printed what your heart is feeling. Same for songs and hymns penned by those who listen to Gods voice and write. And adding our own expressions after we’ve sung their words will always bring joy.

My prayer for you this season, even though there are rough spots, that you will learn to trust Him, trust His plans, and find HIS PEACE and JOY that provides strength for your journey!

MY CREATOR

Look at the sunrise this morning. Oh you missed it - that’s okay - our Creator has provided more beauty for you to enjoy throughout the day.

Notice the sun’s glare bouncing off the dewy leaves; look at each petal of a flower. Marvel at the contrast as morning turns to afternoon, and clouds stream across the bright blue sky. Watch as He paints a gorgeous sunset across the western horizon, closing the day.

He shows us such beauty in creation if we will just be still and notice. It’s like He says, “Good morning my child. Come and take my hand, I have a prepared a beautiful day for you and I to enjoy together.” And although each day is different, I remain awestruck at His creations!

I’m so thankful God our Creator blesses us with a new day with new mercies, unexpected joy, and unexplainable peace. The worries of yesterday over, we can begin again and He is right there.

Oh, what a blessing to have a personal relationship with that Creator.

I wrote this blog post 5 years ago, but it is still so relevant! We must stand in the gap and push back the darkness from our children and be a united front against the attacks from the enemy!

School is starting in a few weeks; we have really got to pray more than ever before and cover our children/grandchildren every day!

MOTHERS UNITE!
Becki Logue

As I reflected on Pastor Mike Fields’s sermon on how Aaron and Hur placed themselves beside Moses at the top of the hill during a significant battle and held Moses’s arms up so that the battle was won (Exodus 17), it sent me on a thought track of how we as mothers need to support each other more than ever before.

Moses and the Israelites had to fight the Amalek army in Rephidim while marching through the wilderness toward the Promised Land. Moses, Aaron and Hur positioned themselves at the top of a hill while the Israelites fought in the valley. Moses held the Rod of God which represented the power of God. This was the rod he had held that had parted the seas and the rod that had struck a rock, sending a fountain of endless water supply from it. Talk about power!

When the battle raged, the Israelites would be winning as long as Moses held his arms high with the rod in his hand. If he put his arms down, the victory would transfer to the Amalekites. Realizing this, Aaron and Hur came alongside Moses and held his arms up when he would become weary.

The battle was fought in the valley, but the battle was won on the hill because of the power of God.

Our children are in battle every day as armies of evil, worldliness, and ungodliness seek to command and overtake their souls We as mothers stand “on the hill” praying and warring in the Spirit. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12 NIV)

We have the Holy Spirit as our power and hold up the Word as the rod. This Word that has healed our children’s fevers and cancers, broken bones and broken hearts. This powerful Word has been the mainstay of our homes during tumultuous times. God allows us to use His Word and His Name freely and unconditionally. We can say a prayer and quote Scriptures and have a host of heavenly armies at our disposal. That is awesome!

However, we as mothers become weary at times. We have committed ourselves to Christ, have prayed and cried out in the night until our tears have soaked our pillows, and yet our arms have gotten tired and our minds confused. Sometimes we stand on the hill to war in the Spirit and our faith is weak because it seems as if we are losing the battle. But wait… here come other mothers alongside us to hold up our arms! Together we combine our faith and prayers and all of a sudden, the battle changes and victories are won! We need each other!

How can we “hold up the arms” of other mothers?

1. Be strong in His might. Together. Be in agreement that God is our source. Our only source. If Aaron and Hur would have been arguing about whether God’s power was real or not, or who was Moses’s favorite, they would have ultimately lost the battle.
2. Be available. There are times when you need support and there are other times that you need to be the support for other mothers.
3. Know the Word. This is our power. In this present evil day, we need to use the Word of God against the enemy. When you know a mother is discouraged, lift her arms with encouraging, positive words from the Word.
4. Pray. Make prayer a habit. Pray instead of talking. Pray instead of worrying. Intercede for the mothers who are in the heat of the battle. Prayer releases strength straight from the source.
5. Stop finding fault with other mothers. Each one of us is trying hard and doing the best we can. Women can be so critical of each other, especially when a mother is in battle for her children. We make statements like, “I cannot believe she let her children do that!” “She should have grounded her!” “She should not let her kids go there.” “I bet I would not have done that with my children.” Etc. Etc. Instead of criticizing, we should be lifting the mothers up in prayer (warring in the Spirit on their behalf). We must use our words to build up and not tear down!

Together, we can win this war that Satan has waged against our children! But we must depend on the Holy Spirit and support each other as never before!

(And now that I am a grandmother, I realize how much I need my fellow grandmothers as well. We hold up the arms of our children, who are now the parents as we stand in the gap and intercede for our grandchildren. I appreciate the support of my friends who are grandmothers as we pray together for our families).

Zechariah 4:6, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty – you will succeed because of my Spirit, though you are few and weak.”

Here is the recipe I discussed last month in a post. Enjoy!

STUFFED CHICKEN DUMPLINS Becki Logue
(“Not your momma’s dumplins”)

Yes, DUMPLINS, not dumplings. We southern folks dropped the “g” a good while ago. I am making an attempt at recreating an old recipe I have used for years and have long since lost my original copy. It has become my family’s favorite dish and when we all get together, these dumplins are requested. I have always altered recipes and added my own touch and usually don’t measure ingredients, but I will try to get as close to accurate as I can. Most measurements are approximate. In a dish such as this, you can certainly add or take away. Or get out your large soup pot and double the recipe.

2 large chicken breasts
6 cups water
¼ c. diced celery or celery flakes
½ c. diced onions
Salt, to taste, or 1 t. granulated poultry bouillon
½ t. ground black pepper
1 t. salt-free Greek Cavender’s seasoning
1 t. Mrs. Dash salt-free herb seasoning

1 can cream of chicken soup
1 can cream of celery soup

1 can (8-count) large Grands flaky layer biscuits

CHICKEN: In large dutch-oven size pot, boil the chicken in water with celery, onions, and seasonings about 30-45 minutes (until chicken is done). Remove chicken from broth. Take off skin, de-bone, (if you used bone-in, skin-on breasts) and dice chicken. Add 1 tablespoon soup from each can and any other seasonings that you might like. (I add a little more Greek Cavender’s and a little onion powder.) Mix this all together.

BROTH: If you need to add more water to your broth, or take any out – just end up with about 4 cups of broth before adding the soups. If your broth doesn’t seem very rich, you can add about ½ stick butter or margarine. (NOTE: I boil the bone-in, skin-on breasts and this richens my broth.) Whisk the cream soups into the broth and bring to a low boil, watching closely so it doesn’t boil over. Keep broth bubbling while dropping in the dumplins.

DUMPLINS: Separate each biscuit horizontally into 2 pieces. Take each circle and add about 1 heaping tablespoon chicken mixture onto the biscuit, stretching and folding over to make a pocket. Seal the edges with your fingers. Continue with all the biscuits. You may have a little chicken left over – if so, just drop into the broth with the dumplins. Add the dumplins to the bubbling broth one at a time, tapping with a spoon to submerge each one and keep them separated. If not enough liquid to cover dumplins, add more water or broth – the dumplins need room to expand a little. Lower the heat to low simmer; cover, and simmer for 30-40 minutes.

PRAYER FOR AUTUMN
Excerpt from “Seasons for Reason” book.
“Dear Lord of the Harvest:
We praise you for the harvest of tangible bounty as well as a harvest of spiritual blessings. We are so thankful for the rain and transitions necessary for our continued growth during this latent season. We worship you for the beautiful creation of fall leaves in the colors that draw attention to the Creator of it all. Help us to remember that you and your comfort are always near.
We ask for your continued close Presence as we wander through the valleys of our lives. We know that if we endure, as we reach out in your name, we will soon dance on the mountain tops enjoying your glory.”

MY TEN-YEAR CANCERVERSARY - LET'S CLOSE THIS CHAPTER!

A DECADE OF VALLEYS AND VICTORIES 2011-2021

Before I close this chapter of my life that has covered an entire decade, I want to blog a few words of encouragement and hopefully be a voice of reason to help others, especially women who may face breast cancer. Today, March 14, is my Cancerversary, which marks the day of my confirmed diagnosis, the day I received that phone call that changed my plans and my life. This year on this date I mark a major milestone of 10 years as survivor. I have undergone all treatments and surgeries to the satisfaction of my Oncologist to be released from annual checkups because “we can be relatively sure that you are cured from the disease.”

Mentally closing this chapter is so important. I will no longer entertain the threat of a return of this disease and therefore not be apprehensive about every ache and pain and spot that appears on my body. I haven’t been tormented by worry or fretted about an occurrence of cancer, but there is a certain flash of wonder once you have heard the statement, “you have cancer.” That word lurks in the corners of your mind and pops up even before you can form your own thoughts. Many times I have “taken thoughts captive,” and reminded myself that I AM HEALED.

EARLY DETECTION IS SO VITAL.

On December 14, 2009, I received a letter form River Region’s Women’s Diagnostic Imaging Center informing me that my mammogram screening was normal. Fast forward to December 2010. With the hustle and bustle of Christmas, helping move my elderly mother in with my brother, and packing for a 3-month trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico, I decided to delay my annual mammo until I returned in the Spring. Here’s where “early detection” warning comes in. I could possibly have had less chemotherapy treatments (I had 8 strong ones) if the cancer cells had been detected in the fall of 2020. The cancer was aggressive (Triple Negative) and so by March it was golf-ball size and had spread to the lymph nodes. Quite possibly I could have avoided the 35 radiation treatments and maybe a small section of tissue could have been removed from my breast rather than radical bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction which involved 7 surgeries in 2 years. I truly believe a few months made a difference in my treatment plan in my case. (NOTE: do not neglect your annual checkups and mammograms! It does matter!)

REACHING OUT TO OTHERS

Going through cancer and recovery has taught me so much in empathy for other cancer patients (or anyone going through a debilitating disease) that I didn’t have before. In these 10 years, I have been offered many opportunities to speak to groups or write articles about my healing and recovery, and express to them how they too can survive with grace. Always, always, the honor goes to my Jesus, my ultimate Healer who was with me in every treatment, surgery, and panic moment. I have gained a trust in Him that no matter what comes my way, He will never leave me or forsake me. I started blogging and was able to get a book published, Seasons for a Reason, to give testimony of God’s goodness and grace. Copies have gone to Canada, the Philippines, and all across the nation.

ANSWERING THE WHYS

Although I may never understand why I had to endure this cancer journey, I will now close the chapter and embrace the next chapter of my life. A friend once told me, “I will not live one day longer than God intends me to, so I will not fear (the return of cancer).” That gives me peace to know that my life is in His hands and will end according to His will. If He has allowed me to remain here, God has something for me to do to help further His Kingdom, and I must make every day count! (“Teach me to number my days.”) Oh, what a glorious thought -He needs me!

SO MUCH GRATITUDE
Many, many people to thank, but at the beginning of this journey, God led us to Dr. Sylvia Ramos in Albuquerque, who immediately got me the most excellent medical care and tests. She told Michael when they were out in the hall, “Whatever you do, don’t drop your insurance.” That was his sign that it wasn’t “looking good.” After a week of mammograms, ultrasounds, and biopsy, the doctor called me on March 14, 2011, and gave me the report which would start the journey to recovery. We returned to Mississippi where we were then led to the most caring and knowledgeable doctors in our area – Dr. Phillip Ley, Dr. Tammy Young, Dr. Zachow, and Dr. Runnels, who guided me through 2 years of treatments and surgeries. I cannot even put into adequate words the love that my husband has shown me throughout my journey. To rub my bald head and look into my weary face drained from the effects of chemotherapy, and say, “my pretty girl,” epitomizes the caring love he had for me. Besides the fact that he cancelled all work assignments for a year to be home with me throughout my treatments and surgeries. For months and years, he has been by my side. Many thanks go to my family and friends who supported me with books, flowers, cards, Scripture encouragement, and most importantly prayers. You never know the value of prayers and support until you go through something like this. To have a loving Father God to be with me cannot be described either. All glory and honor belong to HIM!

Psalm 34:3-8, “Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together. I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. … This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. … Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him.”
