The metalwork on this one deserves just as much attention as the cameo itself.

This beautiful Victorian pendant features a carved carnelian cameo surrounded by an incredibly intricate antique setting.

Carnelian is a reddish-orange to brownish-red variety of chalcedony, with its warm coloring primarily associated with iron compounds. It has been used for carved ornaments, seals, and jewelry since antiquity.

The Science Behind Star Gemstones ⭐
Did you know some gemstones have stars that actually appear to move?

This beautiful black star sapphire displays an optical phenomenon known as asterism, which creates the appearance of a star floating across the gemstone's surface.

But what causes it?

In many star sapphires, the effect is produced by light reflecting off tiny, needle-like inclusions arranged in specific crystallographic directions within the stone. When the gemstone is cut into a smooth, rounded shape called a cabochon, these inclusions can produce a distinct star pattern.

And here's the really interesting part: as the light source or gemstone moves, the star appears to glide across its surface!

Star sapphires most commonly display six-rayed stars, although other patterns can occur depending on their internal structure.

A beautiful example of how a gemstone's inclusions can create something extraordinary.

October really lucked out with its birthstones. 💗

We're showcasing some of our favorite vintage and antique rings featuring opal and tourmaline, October's two beautiful birthstones.

Opal is known for its play-of-color, an optical phenomenon caused by light interacting with microscopic structures within the gemstone.

Tourmaline, on the other hand, is a mineral group celebrated for its incredible variety of colors, from pink and green to blue, red, and even multicolored crystals.

Two completely different gemstones, each with so much variety in appearance and antique settings.
