September seeding works down here because the soil is warm and the air finally is not. But seed only germinates where it touches soil.

Broadcast over a matted lawn and most of it never makes contact. Prep is the job: opening the surface, getting seed into it, and keeping it damp through germination.

This is the week we start pulling cores. Late August through early October is when cool-season lawns in zone 7b can actually recover from aeration and put it to use.

Compacted sandy soil sounds like a contradiction. It is not. Foot traffic and time pack it down, water starts pooling, roots quit going deep.

If your lawn is due, get on the schedule now. This window closes faster than people expect.
