Hi all! I'm Carli Henderson, the 5th generation owner of Schlemmer’s Fire & Outdoor. We are beginning a ‘30 Day Content Calendar’ provided by Visit Wabash County. We hope you’ll follow along for the next 28 days of the journey.
DAY 2: Meet the Owner!
Growing up, my Dad worked all the time, so when he was on kid duty, we would find ourselves at the shop. I have many memories in our old building. His desk, particularly the corkboard wall covered in our artwork and family photos. The smell of coffee all day. Loving the vending machine, and getting full rows of Starbursts when candy was sold underneath the front counter.
I believe my time working here began around middle school. I’ve always been curious and naturally found myself asking lots of questions about the business and its products, which my Dad has always been happy to answer. Thankfully, we both love learning everything there is to know about a thing. Even as a teen, I found myself strategizing, planning, dreaming, and proposing ideas at Schlemmer’s. I was too young to be doing so, but I am my father's daughter (I had my own email account and website before the age of 5, courtesy of Kent Henderson).
After graduating, I began nursing school at Purdue University, realized that was NOT my passion, and, during COVID in 2020, Dad mentioned selling the fireplace store. I felt a lot of emotion thinking about the business leaving our family after 4 generations. After much deliberation, I moved forward with the purchase. At the time, I was still in college and traveled back and forth between West Lafayette and Wabash for school and work.
One of my particular loves is retail, and the childhood dream of having a store. We’re slowly curating products to turn it into a store where people shop for things outside of fireplaces. We now carry BruMates, grilling supplies, sauces, rubs, cocktail smokers, and we're always trying something new. If I love it and it’s unique, I'll try to sell it.
Outside of work, I love my two cats, Juni & Franklin. I recently became a certified yoga teacher. Yoga became a practice that keeps me sane and allows me to see clearly when my head is spinning in every direction, and I want to help others experience the same. Those who know me know that I'm on a side quest more often than not; I want to experience everything life has to offer. Some being biking, riding my motorcycle, sewing, snowboarding, golfing, traveling- the list goes on. I love cooking, especially on the Traeger (for sale at Schlemmer’s Fire & Outdoor 😉). What’s more important to me than anything else is spending time with my friends and family. Life presents its challenges and distractions, but NOTHING matters more than connecting with those we love while we have the time.
I want you to know who the current Schlemmer behind the company is (yes, I am a Schlemmer). My dad always taught me not to sell. We talk, educate, and answer questions. As I mentioned, I’m a bit of a nerd, so that's always been my favorite part.
Welcome! 🔥
