Return on investment is not only about what you gain.

It can also be worth asking what the way you are living is costing you.

Your time.

Your energy.

Your attention.

Your availability.

Your peace.

Success is not only about what you are accomplishing.

It is also about whether the way you are accomplishing it is still sustainable.

Maybe the question is not:

“How much more can I accomplish?”

Maybe it is:

“Is the way I am accomplishing it still worth the cost?”

Sometimes changing how you lead your life doesn’t mean adding another strategy, goal, or routine.

Sometimes it means creating enough space to hear yourself again.

Space to notice what’s draining you.

Space to question what you have been automatically saying yes to.

Space to admit that something that once worked may not work anymore.

Sustainable leadership is not about doing everything better.

Sometimes it is about deciding what no longer deserves the same amount of you.

You may not need to change your whole life.

You may need to change how you are leading the life you have already built.

Sometimes that means releasing what no longer fits.

It can mean renegotiating what has become unsustainable.

It may mean making one different decision about what comes next.

The goal is not always to figure everything out.

Sometimes clarity begins with identifying the next right move.

Sometimes we are so focused on what needs to happen next that we forget to pause and notice what is already here.

Life changes. Responsibilities change. Priorities change. We change.

The work is not always figuring out what to add.

Sometimes it is getting still enough to recognize what still matters, what no longer fits, and where we may be carrying more than we need to.

That kind of clarity can change the next right move.

When a phase of life changes, the answer is not always to change everything with it.

Sometimes we need to pause long enough to recognize what has changed, what still matters, and what is no longer sustainable.

For high-achieving women, that pause can be difficult. We are often used to solving problems by doing more.

But sustainable self-leadership is not about adding another system to an already-full life.

It is about getting clear enough to make the next right move.

That is the work of navigating the messy middle.

I am learning that a full life does not always require choosing one part of yourself over another.

During a day of exploring with my son, he had an opportunity to do some sightseeing on his own while I spent an hour connecting with a Toastmasters club virtually.

Then we came back together and kept exploring.

It was a simple reminder that making room for your own growth does not mean missing out on the people and moments that matter to you.

Sometimes, it is less about balancing everything perfectly and more about making room for the things that matter.

I am learning to make space for all of it! The absolute, complete Messy Middle of becoming, where nothing is fully separate and everything is still unfolding.

Sometimes the best part of becoming is remembering to enjoy the woman you are right now.

No big lesson. No figuring it all out. Just being present for a beautiful moment and letting yourself enjoy it.

We spend so much time thinking about what comes next that it is easy to miss what is already here.

I am learning that becoming can include both. Looking forward while still being present for the life I am living now.

Some places remind us that a story is never just a story.

Visiting the A.L. Lewis Museum and learning more about the preservation of American Beach made me think about the parts of our own stories we choose to remember, the lessons we carry forward, and what we decide belongs in the next chapter.

Becoming does not mean leaving everything behind.

Sometimes, it means deciding what is worth carrying with you.

There are seasons when becoming feels less like becoming someone new and more like remembering who you are.

I have been thinking about that lately.

The butterfly has become a meaningful symbol for me because transformation is rarely as simple as the finished picture makes it look. There is a process of shedding, stretching, waiting, and becoming.

And sometimes, the hardest part is accepting that you cannot rewrite the past.

You can only decide what you will carry forward, what you will release, and who you are becoming from here.

That is part of the messy middle.

There is something about being near the water that reminds me to slow down and take in where I am.

Not everything has to be figured out before it can be enjoyed.

Some seasons are meant to be experienced while they are happening. To notice the view, make room for laughter, enjoy the people around you, and simply breathe.

The Messy Middle is not always about figuring out what comes next.

Sometimes, it is about being fully present for the woman you are today.
