Here is a closer look at the dresser I've been working on. It is a very vintage piece with original faux finish of tiger oak. Early 1900's to 1930's. Poplar or White Pine is the wood of choice because the grain of the wood is less expressive and doesn't compete with the faux application for the tiger oak pattern to be stamped or painted on as well as keeping the cost down for each piece of furniture. The golden tiger oak look was very popular during the time.

This is another dresser I've been working on. It did have varnish coming off in some areas. I went ahead and removed the stain and varnish from the top which revealed the faux wood grain on the dresser. While the faux wood grain resembles oak, I believe the wood to be pine. However the fine example of artisan/craftsmanship is in the vintage faux stain and varnish application to resemble oak. The artist/craftsman did an excellent job.

Dovetails. These are in fact dovetails. Hand cut to be more precise. And that's how you can tell the age. Most folks are used to the standard dovetail that are patterned exactly. Those are machine cut and still a sign that your piece could be considered antique and quality craftsmanship. The dovetail is no longer used today in furniture construction. But these dovetail joints are special in that they are hand cut. You can see that by their size alone and that they don't hold the pattern perfect spaces of the later dovetail joint. These two marble top dresser drawers are pictured with the hand cut dovetail joints.

These two amazing dressers found there way to me. They are not perfect but they are perfectly fine. True antiques and in really good shape for their over 100 year age. I am honored and thrilled to be their next steward. They do have some fixing needed and some cleaning. Check back to stay up on their progress and see how they look after they’ve been cleaned up.
