Getting as much creative time as you truly want can be a challenge – and the constant feeling that you should be doing something more 'productive' is real – but here's how I make time for hands-on hobbies every single day as a busy mom and business owner, WITHOUT feeling guilty:

1️⃣ I take 5-15 minutes of creativity wherever I can get it. I'd LOVE to have an hour for every creative session, but this isn't realistic for me, and 5 minutes is way better than none. I've learned to be okay with doing just a few stitches at a time, or pausing a coloring page halfway through.

2️⃣ I take a broad view of what counts as 'creative'. Different days and moods call for different solutions beyond the traditional. Sorting craft supplies, doing jigsaw puzzles, repairing a button...these hands-on activities all count for me.

3️⃣ I have a designated 'slump day' activity. There are plenty of days when I don't have much energy to make decisions. These are automatically meditative doodle days for me. I just pick up the sketchbook and begin.

4️⃣ I track creative time as a habit. Knowing how much I benefit from even a small amount of creativity every day, I track it as a wellness habit. I love to see my tracker fill up over time!

5️⃣ I swap out scrolling for creative time (this is the big one!!) Sometimes it feels like you shouldn't be spending your time on creativity when there are so many other things that need taking care of, but here's a brutal truth: you are wasting time on your phone every single day. You don't need to take one minute away from being with your family or taking care of your responsibilities in order to have creative time every day. You only need to swap out some of your scrolling time for a creative activity. And what a trade up that is 🫶

If you are someone who wants more creative time but has a hard time making it happen, I have designed something especially for you (because I used to have that problem, too).

It's called the 🌟Creative Self-Care System🌟 and you can check it out for free – comment CREATE to learn more and get a free printable sample that can get you started on your journey to more nurturing creative time today ❤️

Time to set a new vibe for my Creative Self-Care System!

I was feeling a little tired of my old cover and wanting some fresh energy around my tracking/journaling routine, so I decided to print a new cover page and color it as my daily dose of creativity 🖍️

This is a special treat that I intentionally designed into the Creative Self-Care System: that the physical setup gives you a built-in creative activity for those low energy or high mental load days when deciding what creative release to actually sit down and do is just one thing too much 😓

That's when you can simply print yourself a new cover page and have a nice relaxing coloring session to unwind and de-stress 🌟

If the Creative Self-Care System is new to you, it's a simple journaling method that helps you swap mindless downtime habits that *don't actually nourish you* for a little bit of mindful creative time and reflection every day 🙇‍♀️

It's a perfect companion to your creative pursuits, no matter what hobbies you enjoy or are hoping to get into! 🪡🧶🎨

Comment 'SYSTEM' for a free sampler that gives you a little peek into the soothing daily routine of recording your creative activities and mood over a week, or take the leap and dive right into the full system.

It's only ten dollars, and there's no chance you're not going to love it — it changes the rhythm of your days and gives you a surprising amount of time and peace of mind back that you're currently losing to scrolling, which is absolutely priceless 💝

When I'm feeling desperate for calming creative time but also too mentally overwhelmed to start (ever been there??), I have one go-to in my coloring stash:

It's these Easy Peasy Patterns pages, every time.

🌟Here are the 3 big reasons why🌟

1️⃣ Minimal decision making
🧠Your brain is already overloaded. You don't need more decisions to make. Easy shapes and repeating patterns allow you to simply sit down and start spreading color onto the page without trying to figure out how to make a picture "look right"

2️⃣ Repetition
💡It's science: repetition lowers cognitive load and quiets mental noise. Pick a color combo you love, and watch it appear again and again on the page

3️⃣ Simple shapes, just-right size
🪑 No tiny details to decipher, and no giant spaces that are annoying to fill in. Everything is drawn just right for easy, mindful flow (and you never get tired of coloring them anew)

If you crave simple, creative pick-me-ups, you want these on hand ❤️

📢 One of my favorite cathartic cross stitch kits, and it's RETIRING! There are 3 left on the shelf, and once they're gone, they aren't coming back 😱

It's science: anxiety and creativity are fundamentally incompatible in our brains 🧠

They can't be active at the same time — which means that creativity is an incredibly powerful antidote to anxious feelings and spiraling thoughts.

🚨BUT🚨 the other side of that coin is that active anxiety can make it really hard to get into a creative state 😮‍💨

So that's why I love and recommend creative hobbies that don't necessarily require a lot of *imagination* (which can be hard to access when you're feeling stressed) like cross stitch, coloring, meditative drawing, and log-based bullet journaling ✍️🪡🖍️

It's not that you CAN'T bring tons of imagination to these activities, but the beauty is that if that's a blocker for you, they allow you to simply enter a state of creative flow without having to decide what you're going to make — and from there you can feel your worries melt away 💞

If all this sounds like exactly what you need, check out the collections on Room for Calm to find your perfect anxiety-relieving creative outlet today.

And if you need a little bit of extra guidance and motivation to start incorporating mindful creativity into your routine, comment RESET to learn more about the 12-week ritual reset that turns your mental clutter into creative flow 🌿

🛑 Here are 5 instant killers of the joy and relaxation you seek when you pick up your favorite creative hobby:

1. Comparing your work to others. It's SUPER FUN to see what other people are creating and posting, but the moment you start comparing your work to someone else's is the moment the joy evaporates 🌬️

2. Creating imaginary deadlines. If you're making a gift for a birthday or holiday, I get it (although I think the recipient would understand if it was after the date 😊). But outside of that situation, setting deadlines for your fun projects just adds stress!

3. Trying to do it "right". Every craft has best practices, but the beauty of arts and crafts is that there are unlimited ways to do them. Your process and your creations are your own, and you should go about them in whatever way makes you actually enjoy the journey. That might mean following certain "rules" because you like how they work for you, and ignoring others. 🤷‍♀️

4. Agonizing over the process. Can't decide which color to use? Trying to figure out whether English or Danish stitching is better? Don't let yourself get stuck in every little decision or you'll never reach a flow and get all those wonderful mental health benefits of creating. Make any choice, see how it looks/feels, and you can always adjust as you go (even if that means your final product isn't "perfect").

5. Setting rules for yourself. You don't HAVE to work on something every day. You don't HAVE to finish one project before moving on to the next. You don't HAVE to finish every project at all! Consciously or not, we tend to set lots of rules for ourselves because...I don't know why. 🙃 But this is your sign to free yourself from those arbitrary pressures.

I hope this reminder helps you reclaim your creative joy and relaxation ❤️

"I'm going to color to relax!" you think, but then...the instant you put pressure on how your final page turns out, the therapeutic quality you were going for evaporates 😩

Suddenly, you're in stress mode instead of reset mode — it's the worst!

Here in social media world, here's the very best tip I have for reducing this self-imposed pressure:

Don't ✨ plan✨ to post your pages for anyone else to see 🙈

It sucks you right out of the present and into the unimportant future of how it's going to look and how that will be received — and it's a total mood killer ❌

My advice: sit down with your only plan being to walk away feeling more calm, relaxed, and present than when you started. You don't even have to finish what you're working on!

Color for yourself and the peace the physical action and creative stimulation bring. And if you end up totally in love and can't wait to share, go ahead and snap that pic and put it in your feed!

If you are looking to incorporate more creative self-care into your daily routine — and make sure your relaxing hobbies *stay* relaxing, you are in the right place 👋
