A mantel makeover that made all the difference!

Sometimes a few thoughtful changes completely transform a space! We lowered the mantel, replaced the mirror with European deer mounts, fresh greenery, candlesticks, and books, and chose a paint color that complements the undertones of the marble countertops in the adjoining kitchen.

Designer tip: Mirrors over mantels are beautiful, but only when they reflect something interesting! This one was reflecting a ceiling fan.

The result? Organic, fresh, and so pretty! 🤍

What homes are made for. ❤️

Friday night I had the joy of opening our home to friends from our Worship Team at Refresh Community Church, alongside my friend Leah, owner of wrappedandwritten.

Leah and I both work in creative industries, spending our days making beautiful things for others. Her gorgeous calligraphy is worth checking out!

But as much as we love creating beauty for our clients, there’s something even sweeter about bringing that creativity into our own homes and sharing it with the people we love.

An evening of soup, salad, good conversation, making music and a house full of friends.

At Mason House Design, I believe a beautiful home isn’t just about how it looks. It’s about the life that happens inside it. Friday night was a sweet reminder of just that. ❤️

27 years married and still finding beautiful places to explore together! ❤️

Eric and I spent a wonderful afternoon celebrating our anniversary at The Loading Dock in Grafton, Illinois. Live music, a few drinks and absolutely perfect weather!

We stumbled upon the most beautiful event space tucked behind the weekend flea market, right on the Mississippi River. It was quiet, peaceful and so simply designed. We found a spot right at the water’s edge and stayed awhile.

As a designer, I need days like this. Time away to slow down, take in beautiful spaces and find fresh inspiration. This space was such a lovely reminder that less really can be more. Simple, modern and timeless. Nothing competing with the beautiful surroundings.

We ended the day watching the sunset over the Mississippi on the ferry back toward St. Charles. Just perfect!

Sometimes inspiration comes when you’re not even looking for it.

Some days you win. Some days you wonder why you didn’t hire a moving company. 😂

Yesterday, Megan and I were working on a client’s primary bedroom, and I cannot WAIT to show you this space! We’re just waiting on a gorgeous Java-colored velvet sectional from West Elm for the sitting area.

But first, we had a little problem to solve.

We layered a beautiful area rug over the carpet, but the rug kept bunching under the bed. Turns out, you need a special rug pad designed for layering rugs over carpet. Who knew?

The bigger problem? Moving the BED. We researched furniture levers, bought little furniture dollies (basically miniature skateboards), and even broke out the CAR JACKS from our vehicles. Yes, actual car jacks. 😂

And after all that? The bed wouldn’t budge.

Enter our client’s husband and teenage sons. Apparently, the solution was MUSCLE. 💪

Interior design. Equal parts creativity, problem-solving, and questioning your life choices.

You win some, you lose some. But at least we got a good story out of it!

Some days interior design looks like pretty finishes and styled rooms. Other days it looks like moving furniture, hauling boxes, sourcing, pickups, deliveries, and putting it all back together again.

I really do love that this work keeps me moving but today, my dogs are tired!😂 Not a bad place to put my feet up though.

And yes, that’s Benjamin Moore Bo***ir on the walls. The artwork? You may be surprised where I found it.

A little throwback to this finished project from last October.

My client already had beautiful pieces, she just needed help pulling everything together and knowing what to keep, what to move, and what to let go.

In the living room, we gave a long empty wall purpose by adding storage, then styled it to bring some order and cohesion to the space.

In the dining room, we brought in color and created a cozy little seating vignette that made the room feel warmer and more intentional.

Such a good reminder that you don’t always need to start over. Sometimes you just need a fresh set of eyes, a little editing, and a plan.

Cheers to one year with Megan at Mason House Design! 🤎

Last September, Megan and I sat down for coffee to talk about whether she might have any interest in working with Mason House Design. We knew each other a little from church, and I had helped lead worship with her husband, but I really had not spent much time with her. We clicked right away.

I quickly learned how much Megan had to bring to MHD. She loves design, has a background in event planning, and has strengths in areas that have helped the business in ways I could not have imagined. Numbers, spreadsheets, measurements, all the things that make my head spin, do not bother her a bit. 😅

I tend to see the big picture. Megan is so good at getting into the details. She notices when something is a little askew, helps keep track of a million moving parts, measures, plans, shops, styles, and works incredibly hard. Some days we work so hard our heads are spinning, but she always brings care and thoughtfulness to our clients and their homes.

Having Megan with Mason House Design this past year has helped me grow the business in so many ways. I am incredibly grateful for her feedback, organization, perspective, and all the ways she serves our clients and adds beauty to their homes.

So cheers to fall, and especially cheers to one year of Megan at Mason House Design. 🤎 I’m so grateful for you, Megan!

Yesterday I showed you the blue sideboard in the Commons, where we used it for toy storage. Today, I’m showing you that same sideboard in a completely different home, where we used it as a coffee bar in the kitchen.

Same piece. Different purpose. That’s part of what I love about good design.

This kitchen didn’t need a complete renovation. It needed a designer’s eye.

Sometimes you don’t need to change everything. You just need to know what to change.
