1. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the 3 tablespoons of butter.
2. Add the sliced onions and coat them well with the butter. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 12-15 minutes until the onions are soft and browned.
3. Stir in the thyme, salt, and pepper, and then set the mixture aside.
4. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
5. Keep the rolls intact in their package and slice them across the middle to separate the tops from the bottoms.
