One of the biggest decisions here was how to make the stone work harder in a space without much natural light. We chose a leathered finish for the quartzite, which softened the contrast in the veining while adding texture and visual interest.
That mattered in this basement bar because the material needed to create some of the depth and dimension that natural light would normally provide. The leathered finish catches light more softly, reduces glare, and gives the stone movement without making the space feel too glossy or formal.
Understanding lighting is crucial to good design, and it is about much more than selecting beautiful fixtures. It is understanding how stone, wood, metal, paint, and texture will respond in a particular lighting environment, and using those relationships to create a space that feels balanced, layered, and intentional.
By extending the quartzite onto the wall and keeping the upper area open, the material becomes part of the architecture and brings richness to the room without making it feel heavy.
