Ponsonby Intermediate School to Reopen as Auckland Community Mourns Beloved Principal Nick Wilson
Auckland, New Zealand — Ponsonby Intermediate School will reopen its doors on Tuesday, 19 May 2026, after closing on Monday to allow students, staff, and families time to grieve the sudden death of Principal Nick Wilson. 
Wilson passed away on Saturday evening, 16 May 2026, following a sudden medical event. The news, shared in an email to parents and caregivers on Sunday afternoon by Board of Trustees Chairman Hamish Hopkinson, has left the tight-knit Ponsonby community and wider Auckland education sector in profound shock. 
“It is with enormous sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the sudden passing of our Principal, Nick Wilson,” Hopkinson wrote. The statement described the loss as devastating for the school whānau. 
A Dedicated Leader
Wilson was widely regarded as a passionate educator who dedicated his career to supporting young people. Before becoming principal, he was highly respected as a physical education teacher known for his energy, encouragement, and commitment to building students’ confidence and character. 
Under his leadership, Ponsonby Intermediate maintained a strong focus on student achievement and holistic development. Colleagues and former students have described him as a caring leader who fostered a positive, engaging learning environment. 
The school’s website confirmed the closure on Monday, 18 May, and advised parents to read the detailed email sent to the community. Counselling and support services are expected to be available when students return on Tuesday.
