Spirits of our Grandmothers
Every summer for many generations, our mothers and grandmothers gathered together at fish camps to help the family prepare and preserve the salmon that run through our rivers during summer. A tradition that is still practiced today until recently when wild salmon stocks have been affected by climate change, commercial high-seas trawling, hatcheries and mining. All of which are slowly encroaching and preventing indigenous people's inherent right to practice their traditions, cultures and taking away a vital source of food. This mask is a testament of our mother's and grandmother's hard work. Cutting, preparing and smoking salmon.

Neqa Mask - Fish/Food

This mask honors the salmon that has sustained our people and cultures for millenia and still do to this day! Neqa (singular) or Neqet (plural) are the staple food of the Yup'ik people and all cultures throughout the world. The yearly runs that come up and through the rivers provides its people the right diet to survive throughout the winter. There are 5 salmon species that we coexist with in the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta: Chinook "Taryaqvak", Red "Sayak", Chum "Kangitneq", Silver "Qakiyaq" and occasionally Pink "Amaqaiyak."

The salmon species that returned in great numbers for millenia are on the decline due to many factors including overfishing, climate change, pollution, mining, habit loss and disease.

The Spirit of the Sea

The imarpik is a very dangerous, beautiful and bountiful place in all coastal cultures within Alaska. It's wild and untamed waters are abundant in wildlife that provides the sustenance to our peoples, bringing them warmth and energy to survive the cold winter. This mask pays homage to the Spirit of the Sea, which still is the lifeline of our people today.

Measurements:
Shadowbox 12 in. x 15 in. Mask: 10 in. x 11.5 in.
