Recently acquired this picture of Banneker Elementary school in Loudoun County. It’s named for Benjamin Banneker, a fascinating individual in our country’s history. He was born a free black man and was a self taught mathematician, astronomer and farmer. His grandmother was a white woman who had come to the colonies as an indentured servant and married a slave who claimed to be an African prince. Benjamin published several almanacs and in his senior years, assisted in the survey of the new federal city, Washington, DC. The picture is beautifully framed and matted with a postage stamp from several years ago honoring Banneker.

Every year we get asked why we don’t have pumpkins. Well…we have pumpkins! Delivered today by the growers (pictured). They are our neighbors at the farm. Lily planted most of the half acre patch and Nick can tell you the name of each variety. Best prices too! Hurry in for best selection!

This is a Carolina mantis and it’s a native. For that reason we let it stay though it is hanging out in the flowers, waiting I am sure, to catch a butterfly. This bug is slightly more discriminating of what it eats than the imported Asian mantis and fully half the size. We finally checked the spread of the Asian mantis in our butterfly garden (the egg cases look quite different from the native so are easy to gather in the fall and get rid of), and if this one gets out of hand we will check it too. We like our butterflies!
