We’ve had a run on people seeking uranium glass this year, and we’d run out.
Friend to the rescue! This dainty pattern glows like a champion under black light, and it’s pretty too. There are over 30 new pieces.

Looks like oatmeal, right? It’s actually barley. Why would you care?
It’s because it’s the foundation of our precious metal weight system. A ‘Troy’ ounce, equal to 1.097 regular ounces, originated in the ancient town of Troyes in France, an important 16th century trade center.
Exactly 480 grains of barley is the measure. If you’ve kept pace with the dizzying rise in price for precious metals, it’s good to know how it’s weighed!

Car tags. I’m not crazy about them. They often have rough edges, people looking thru them clank and crash, and frankly they have never made my heart beat faster.
Until today.
I wasn’t really aware that different eras had such strikingly different sizes, different states had tags of different weights, and finishes on tags sure didn’t all hold up to weather and exposure in the same way. Amazingly, these are pristine, with only minor blemishes. I’m showing about 1/4 of the new stash, and I admit it, my heart beat a little faster.

Rings. Gorgeous rings. But if they’re large enough to slide over a knuckle, they often swivel on the your finger.
My mom had a ring with a ‘arthritis catch’: It opened and allowed easy access to the slender part of your finger. I thought this was a new invention, but today saw an illustration of an 1800s ring with a side catch. In a RING! Color me impressed.

The ‘most interesting’ pin to cross my path was the diamond pin used to secure and display a fine lace handkerchief. I no longer have it, but it’s the only one I’ve ever seen. More common are the watch pins used to secure a small ladies pocket watch. This example has a nice sapphire and pearl mount, and the back shows the hook used to suspend the watch.

There was a chance today to dive back into a book of Victorian catalogs from several jewelry manufacturers. These have been excellent research tools to find out the purpose of items you’re unsure about. You can recognize a ‘pin’ when you see one, but…. Was there a specific PURPOSE for that design? Sure enough-each page showed their use. I found the box pins to hold woven hair especially interesting. Modern wearers might feel creeped out, but wearing one used to be a sign of great affection.

Antique shops are funny places. Merchandise ranges from ‘oh, how interesting/beautiful/well made’ to ‘wonder what they were thinking?’
Case in point: earrings: the strangest ones I ever had were Victorian aluminum ( much more expensive than gold or platinum at the time they were made) made as miniature oil drills. Really. That drill was a new invention at the time, and the news ( and fashion) were full of it.
These are a similar era, but crafted from a simple peach pit. Yes, peach pit. Set in 10k, and beautifully carved, too. ‘Back to nature’ was a thing right then, and we have a lasting well made relic of the era that you can wear. Too cool.

One minute you’re a perfectly ordinary person, the next you realize you’ve become a rabbit hoarder.
Sheesh!
I haven’t hosted Easter for a long time, but continued to pick up ‘bunnies’. Like rabbits are reputed to do, they multiplied quickly.

It astonishes me how things can reside in an antique shop for long periods, then begin to march out the door. Today’s example is horse teeth and linens. Fossilized horse teeth, to be exact, and today we sold two!
We also sold doilies and runners and crewel embroidery etc.
We have some beautifully framed examples of needlework which have largely gone unnoticed, and an entire cabinet with drawers full of embroidered pillowcases, table cloths of all types and random needlework. When you visit, allow time and be prepared to dig.
Fair warning: if you leave my linens in disarray, I have to hurt you.

It’s almost Easter, and this year I realized that the ‘Snow Babies’ line produced some cute youngsters with bunny ears.
We don’t carry many seasonal items, but it occurred to me that a nice glass basket would make a dandy centerpiece for a table at Easter, and on other special occasions could be filled with seasonal candies.
As a chocoholic, anything which enables my habit is fine with me!
