Yesterday I had the joy of hosting the Sheep Laurel Garden Club from Cashiers at Chestnut Cottage for a stroll in the garden and afternoon tea! It was hot, but thankfully we escaped the daily afternoon showers. It was a fun group and we had a lovely summer afternoon.

Today I celebrate Mother’s Day by celebrating my Mother and both of my grandmothers with flowers…inside the cottage and in the garden! Each of these three women loved flowers and inspired me to plant many of their favorites…peonies, foxgloves, delphiniums, lupins, lilacs, hollyhocks, sweet Williams, roses and many more. The smell of peonies always brings back memories of my paternal grandmother. The sweet smell of the peonies was matched by her sweet, loving disposition. I helped Granny pick peonies for “decoration day” (Memorial Day) as we had interesting discussions about ants on the peonies. She lived in the country and grew beautiful flowers , as well as vegetables. I can still see the towering hollyhocks that stood against her garden fence. My maternal grandmother lived in town and mostly grew annuals, my favorite being her deep red geraniums. I always include these in my window boxes at Chestnut Cottage in her honor. My beautiful Mother loved arranging and growing flowers and I still have her collection of “frogs” that I use in my flower arrangements. Today each of us can savor the lovely memories of our mothers and grandmothers. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! How are you celebrating? Think green for your table, either formal or rustic, green is the key. For your St. Patrick’s Day meal, start with a beet and goat cheese salad ,followed by trout or salmon, green bean bundles and traditional Ulster champ and some yummy cheddar scones! On this special day, I always long to be back at my grandfather’s family home in County Down Northern Ireland. So today, have fun celebrating the beautiful Emerald Isle…and think green!

Signs of the forthcoming spring have arrived in the garden at Chestnut Cottage. The early brilliant yellow daffodils have turned their faces to the sun , the tiny delicate snowdrops are pushing through the winter soil, and the hardy hellebores are blowing in the March wind. I simply can’t resist bringing them inside to slow off amongst the blue and white. Meanwhile, Duncan MacDuff warms himself on the compost in the warm March sun! Spring is on the way!!
