What's the 1 thing you can't throw an outdoor party without?!

There's nothing like a warm summer evening spent with friends and we love how easy it is to set up a simple, low maintenance hang or an elaborate backyard party with a few simple touches. "Wow. our patio looks amazing - can we keep it this way?!"

Every time someone lets us borrow their outdoor living space to do a product photoshoot, we get comments like this and it just proves how simple it is to give your patio new life! When we set up a space, we make minor changes but they make a HUGE difference - here's a few of our best tips to make your patio so cozy you'll never want to go inside:

🌻Add some plants or flower! It might seem obvious since you're outdoors, but we're not just talking about your big flower pots or your vegetable garden. Get some smaller plants to add to tabletops too!

✨Throw pillows and blankets are magic! This is probably our favorite way to update a space because it's simple, makes the space cozier and more comfortable so you stay in it longer, and there are a million pillow and throw patterns/colors/styles that will totally change the vibe in a second.

🔥 Mood lighting is a must! Even during the daytime, layering lighting at different levels (think string lighting, 5 ft torches, tabletop candles, giant statement candles or lanterns at ground level) just gives the space a more finished feel. Plus our citronella candles help keep those mosquitoes at bay.

Want your candles to burn longer? Make sure you follow this tip 👇

When you get a new candle and you're ready to light it for the first time, there's a few simple tips you can use to get a longer, more even burn out of it! First, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch and toss the trimmings (you should actually do this step before every lighting!)

Next, let the candle burn until the wax pool reaches the edges of the candle before blowing out. You only need to do this step the first time you light a new candle, and it will help it burn more evenly for the rest of its life. That means a longer burn time, less tunneling, and a better throw - meaning the candle's scent is better distributed while it burns, this is extra important with citronella candles if you want to keep🦟 away!

👆 This right here is what it's all about, why we do what we do.

Before we started Patio Essentials in 2014, we noticed that none of the citronella candles we could find in stores were exactly decorative. They were utilitarian things made just for keeping bugs away. But we wanted something that would keep mosquitoes away AND help make our outdoor living spaces feel more like an extension of our homes.

So today we have everything from fun bucket candles to giant statement pieces so that whether you prefer fun pops of color, or a farmhouse aesthetic, you can find a citronella candle that looks great in your space.

Looking to keep those mosquitoes away? Keep reading! 👇

Use your citronella candles and torches filled with a citronella-scented torch fuel to create what we call a "Barrier of Protection." The scent of citronella helps keep mosquitoes away by masking the scents that they're attracted to, so just putting one or two candles out in the center of your patio table isn't going to do the trick.
