WOW! It’s been a very long time since I have been able to post a project here. Finally, a new home on Lake Minnetonka is starting construction in Tonka Bay. The client lives out of town and this will become their retirement home,
The first priority was viewing from all the rooms. The existing house had an orientation that gave a short view across the bay, by rotating the axis of the new structure; the view is orientated to a long three-mile view through a channel area between points and islands. This is a small change, yet will make the most significant effect on the homeowner's enjoyment of the property. I always start my design process with the site, the site will always give answers as to how to proceed with the design.
The second major priority was to have covered porches at the entry side and the lakeside. The north side has a screen porch so the front and back covered porches wrap around into the screen porch. In other words, this house has true wrap around porches. On the street side, the porch is a stained concrete floor. On the lakeside, the porch floor is a deck that extends out beyond the covered portion.
The third priority was to save a number of very old significant trees on the lakeside. This required setting the house back from the lake and the trees enough to hopefully not disturb the roots. In order to prevent compressing the soil, fencing has been set at the “drip lines” of the trees so no equipment or material will be put over the root area.
Over the course of construction, I will try to post pictures.
I am very available to help anyone with any size project they might be considering. Please let me know if you are planning any project, nothing is too small or big. I simply need work! I always am available for a free consultation to help determine if you might benefit from my design services.
