Such a fun project - amazing clients 😀

While we await the reveal of this year’s LIFE IN COLOR contest winners, we want to remind everyone of last year’s beautiful winning projects! Starting with Kristen Koroloff of K2 Interior Designs who put a modern spin on the traditional nautical theme, taking the quintessential color palette of navy and white and adding in pops of green, stylish patterns, and unexpected artwork to create a fresh, bright space. For once, don’t do it.
Don’t pretend there’s not a problem in America.
Don’t turn your back on racism.
Don’t accept innocent lives being taken from us.
Don’t make any more excuses.
Don’t think this doesn’t affect you.
Don’t sit back and be silent.
Don’t think you can’t be part of the change.
Let’s all be part of the change.
- Nike Ad

I've never posted anything like this on my IG account, but today I feel that I must. I’m a white woman and I understand that I have benefited from being born with that privilege (although I'm sure I will never truly understand to what extent completely). What I have witnessed this past week in my hometown has brought feelings of outrage, sadness, disbelief, and hurt. More than ever, it’s time to condemn systemic racism - vocally, loudly, explicitly, passionately, intelligently, and tirelessly. It’s not enough to quietly oppose what every one of us damn well knows is happening around us. We need to turn anger and disbelief that a black man can be murdered in broad daylight by a police officer (who KNOWS his actions are being taped) into action and advocate for change.

When I was working as a social researcher in Denver years ago, a colleague of mine was telling us about her 3 young sons and a few of the “hard, NON-negotiable rules”. One of the most crucial was that they were NEVER EVER to run ANYWHERE unless they were on a sports field, in a gym class, etc. I looked at her confused for a second, and then I realized what she was saying and I was so flooded with sadness and anger, I felt sick.....can you imagine having to actually teach your child that a totally normal, natural activity like running outside is forbidden because some day that could cost you your life? Speak up people.... EVERYone deserves to live a life filled with equality and HOPE for a better tomorrow.

Happy weekend .... I love seeing, studying and often times drooling over the work of other designers, photographers, and stylists - it provide what I like to call - the two "i"s ....

INSPO & INFO

As a designer, I often feel a bit like a detective and studying how others have approached a certain design is not only insightful - it's fun :) I might be batting around a fews options in my head ..... should I run the exposed shelving to the corner wall, how should I transition from the wood to the tile flooring, do I want to use a neutral or contrasting grout color, how should I conceal the ceiling beam joints, what is the best photo angle to highlight a certain design element, and the list goes on and on and on.
These are the questions that I ponder in the middle of the night when I can't sleep - fun right? This fabulous kitchen is knocking it out of the ballpark on the "info and inspo meter" with everything from the ceiling beams to the flooring to the hood design and the way this photo is composed with the strong one point perspective basically just makes me want to scream YES it's so damn good. I bet you can't pick just one thing you love either??

Well because we're all about washing out hands 24/7 these days - I figured we could all use a little "sink inspo" and this little gem is what I would refer to as .....

OLD SCHOOL

And when I say that, it's in the most respectful and endearing manner. To me old school means "something close to old-fashioned, but it's a term with much more pride behind it. Indeed, if someone says, “I'm old school,” they're saying they do it like it used to be done, which they believe was a better way."

Marble, brass, exposed plumbing ..... and do you spy the best old school thing ever - yep, it's a big bar of old fashioned soap. Pull up a chair folks because it looks like non-stop hand washing is definitely here to stay, so why not make it functional but fabulous as well? Could your washing situation use a little re-fresh?

Don't mind me - I'll just be laying on this fabulous chaise, with a warm spring breeze blowing through the window while I relax .... yep, and I think I shall also be ....

EATING BON BONS

Yeah I'm joking - BUT having a peaceful place to relax, read, or unwind is not a luxury - it's a necessity. So many people feel that having a space like this is something for "another day" .... a day when they don't have little kids spilling purple yogurt tubes on the furniture.

Nope, you can have it now my friends - we have performance fabrics that are snow white, blush velvet, or cream boucle 🥰 So go ahead and carve out a special place just for you .... and if a rogue yogurt tube or grape juice box jumps on board - no problem!

Treat yourself to a special place like this!

Does your dining table look like this, or is it covered with unfinished jigsaw puzzles, broken crayons, and other stay at home "fun".....well given that most of us aren't currently hosting elaborate dinner parties, let's just roll with it for now!

If you're preparing gourmet meals on a nightly basis and dressing your table with crisp linens and glowing candles, wow.....you are a rock star and I wish I could pop over for a cocktail and a canape :)

For the rest of us, when we are ready to turn the "dining table" back into an actual dining table, it might be time to update the "dining situation". One material that I've long loved is caning - furniture made from the rattan vine native to Indonesia. It's a solid flexible vine, which when woven into chair seats and backs creates a more comfortable and breathable surface than solid wood. It's textural surface is not only beautiful but durable as well.......and there you have it - a little homeschooling just for you!

Tuesday's kitchen goals brought to you courtesy of Disc Interiors. Raise your hand if you've spent more time cooking lately? I know I have, and this kitchen has so many "yummy" vibes I'm sure you can't for me to point out :)

Here's the short list:
- black metal framed arched windows and door 🖤
- dark ceiling beams 🖤
- green perimeter cabinetry with a natural wood island 🖤
- heavily veined marble counters and backsplash 🖤
- an island with NO barstools - yes, I love it 🖤
- offset island pendants 🖤

Yeah, it's true that I'm a lover of white kitchens, but this break from the traditional mold is stunning. It makes me want to whip up a gourmet dinner - ok, just kidding.....it makes me want to sit there with a cold martini and watch someone else whip up a gourmet dinner :)

MAGNOLIAS

It might seem a bit counterintuitive that magnolia trees can grow in Minnesota, but yep they do. If you live towards the top of the Northern Hemisphere, now is a great time to cut some flowering or budding branches and bring them inside to enjoy.

Tips & Tricks ....
- Woody stems need to drink quickly
- Cut stems diagonally to expose more surface area
- If stems are thick, split the bottom 2"

Secret Weapon Pro Tip .... dip stems in Floralife Quick Dip to revive wilted blooms and maximize the hydration process.

A light-filled space with fresh flowers, greens, or branches can go a long way to brightening your overall mood and well-being. If you have other questions - ask away!

This is what garden dreams are made of ....

THE POTTING SHED

I will have to put this in the "goals" category for now, but someday I would absolutely love to have my very own potting shed - a place where I could hide away and putter around with plants, flowers, herbs, vegetables, and anything else that springs to life with some sunshine, soil, and water 🌿🌿A place to keep all my pots, containers, tools, watering cans, support stakes - you name it. Right now more people than ever are trying their hand at gardening. Do it - it's not that difficult. If you have limited space, you can do almost anything in large pots!

There's a great sense of anticipation AND satisfaction of growing your own flowers or food :)

It's truly one of my "happy" things that's keeping me sane these days! Do you have a "happy place" or something that keeps you going and gives you inspiration? Do you need a new "happy place" - we can help with that :)

Raise your hand if you need .... A HUG

I'm going to admit that I've been feeling like an emotional yo-yo going up and down as the hours turn to days turn to weeks and so on. Everyone deals with stress, fear, change, sadness, etc in different ways and I'm sure everyone has now seen tons of messages about how to cope with everything that is out of our control right now ....

Here are the Clift Notes:
- fresh air and exercise
- eating healthy foods
- getting plenty of sleep

And if all else fails, a good old-fashioned deep breath can help .... I'm not sure if this has made it to any of the "hot lists" out there yet, but looking at beautiful designs on IG helps me :) This Park & Oak designed kitchen had me smiling this weekend and made me want to skip down that runner to check out the pantry view. When I was about 4 or 5 years old, I loved "hiding" in my Grandmother's walk in pantry. She had an old metal step ladder and I'd sit in there on the top step and eat Hostess Ho-Hos and I instantly felt better 😂....

So I feel like I'm contributing somehow today by re-posting this amazing design and sending each and every one of you a virtual hug and Ho Ho. Know someone who could use some HoHo love - forward and share on!

So yesterday I was out walking and spying gorgeous "about to bloom" branches, and I started thinking about one of my favorite parts of design ....

STYLING

Just saying the word makes me giddy. I just love that part of a project when all the "bones" and "anchors" are in place and it's time to add all the fun juicy details that make any design truly sing! It's a part of design that can be changed with the seasons - or when we are all home staring at spaces we never have time to even give a second thought! It's the art of adding and subtracting until the mix is pitch perfect .... getting the placement spot on (an inch to the right - no 2 inches to the right :) .... creating a look that invokes a certain feeling ....

Yep it sure looks easy in all the pretty pictures, but it's a talent for sure and Steve Cordony is one talented dude. I could wax poetic on this scene right here forever (don't worry I won't) but a few highlights include the texture in the rug, the way the drapes pool, the linen slipcover with just the right amount of "wrinkle" so we know it's linen, the juxtaposition of the modern lamp on an antique table behind a vintage wooden stool - and I'm just getting going! Do you need styling inspo ..... follow along! Do you need styling help - give us a call :)

Take a peek into this kitchen loveliness....Trying to take a break from the virus heavy posts of late to just pause for a moment and spy a bit of kitchen goodness.

This weekend, armed with an extra-large Yeti of hot java, I spent a few hours one morning sitting on my front porch just scrolling mindlessly and I peeped this little gem. I must say, there's something about an arch that just frames most anything in a beautiful way....and this is no exception!

Classic things like shaker cabinets, white subway tile, slate floors, brass fixtures, and a vintage table coming together to create a timeless space with endless appeal - I could wash dishes all day right here. And speaking of dishes....how many of you have washed more than your fair share of them lately??
