Mending our textiles honors the art of repair and reuse.
Visible mending has long been a practical and expressive tradition across continents and cultures. This class celebrates that legacy while centering your own artistic style.
The Japanese tradition of sashiko is known for its even running stitches and geometric repetition, which turn utility into aesthetics. North African appliqué, European darning, and Appalachian patchwork lean more organically, shaping aesthetics from necessity.
Visible Mending brings these traditions together—not to flatten their differences, but to invite your own response. You’ll be encouraged to stitch from what speaks to you: your heritage, your wardrobe, your values, your style.
What’s helpful is that we have a starting place to support you. Approved Textiles has over 75 designs—each printed on a water-soluble stabilizer that lets you easily transfer patterns onto your fabric. Whether you’re drawn to stars, gourds, Dolly Parton, or something more abstract, there’s something to spark your imagination.
In this workshop, you’ll bring a woven garment in need of repair and learn how to give it new life. We’ll provide sashiko thread and needles, handloom-woven patch fabrics, and a set of water-soluble mending transfers (featuring four designs) to support your process. Space is limited so please call Woolly&Co to reserve your spot. 248-490-4354
