Is it too late to plant tulip bulbs? This is the question I’m getting most right now, so let’s talk about the science of planting tulips in fall. 🌷
When to plant tulip bulbs isn’t really about a date. It’s about cold soil. If you plant tulips too early while the ground is still warm, the bulb gets confused, thinks it’s spring, and sends up leaves that frost can damage.
Tulips also have a cold requirement. Tulip bulbs need about 12 to 16 weeks of winter chill to form a flower. Skip the cold and you can end up with short stems, small blooms, or no tulips at all. That’s why planting tulip bulbs in late October or November works so well here in Utah.
So how late can you plant tulips? As long as you can still dig, you can plant. The true deadline for fall bulb planting is when the ground freezes solid, and that’s usually weeks after your first frost.
Found a forgotten bag of tulip bulbs in the garage? Plant them this week. A tulip bulb in cold ground will always do better than one sitting in a bag. 💛
