The beauty of design: European interiors - why do they take our breath away?

From an English country house to a French Bastide in Provence, European interiors begin with the architecture: the proportions of a room, the rhythm of its floors, and the iconic materials that give each room permanence. From French limestone and oak flooring to reclaimed terra cotta and Delft tile - together homes are defined before the first purchase of furniture.

In our latest European Design Library article, we explore the principles behind enduring European interiors—and how to bring them into our homes today.

For centuries, limestone has lent permanence to manor homes and country houses, grand entrance halls, mudrooms, and kitchens. Its colors range from soft ivory and warm beige to oyster and olive gray—to Belgian blues. Formed over millions of years, these stones bear traces of seashells and mineral deposits, enhancing its texture and patina.

Each stone in our collection has its own story. Together, they recall the floors that give historic European interiors their magnificence.

Antiqued Delft Tiles - Historic Delft Tile for Today’s Interiors
Antiqued Delft tiles are resurging in interior design. Perhaps because life moves so quickly, we are drawn to interiors that ask us to slow down.
For centuries, Dutch Delft tiles brought art into everyday European interiors—blue and white landscapes, animals, ships and flowers across kitchen walls and fireplaces. What makes our antiqued Delft tile collection distinctive is that the original collection was hand-painted by our co-founder specifically for Historic Decorative Materials—giving the tiles an artistic identity entirely their own. Today, their softly aged surfaces and timeworn character feel relevant again. Our interiors yearn for art, nostalgia, history and the quiet evidence of the human hand—things that bring a sense of permanence and peace. Link in Bio

Reclaimed French Terra Cotta Flooring from Normandy, France.

Salvaged from a 19th-century women’s bathhouse on the Normandy coast, these handmade terra cotta tiles date to approximately 1875.

Nearly 150 years of use have softened their surfaces, creating a delicate palette of powdery rose, faded salmon, pale ochre, chalky cream, weathered red and smoky mineral gray.

Each approximately 6⅜” square tile bears the irregular edges, pits, mineral inclusions and subtle firing variations characteristic of authentic antique French terra cotta flooring.

Shown alongside Queen’s White Antiqued French Oak Flooring from our Great House Collection, the faded colors reveal how beautifully reclaimed French terra cotta pairs with pale European oak—the warmth of the clay against the quiet, weathered tones of the wood.
